Sunday, 24th November 2024 - Woodland Walk
I write exhausted but full of happy happy memories. Herbie has been collected by his family. It was lovely to see them back together again and how much they had missed each other.
Tom made a delightful surprise visit with Fable this afternoon. He had been celebrating a birthday with a friend. It had run into two days. He dropped in on his way back home. We had a very warm and windy walk into the village to the playground. Thank you Tom for dropping in.

Saturday, 23rd November 2024 - It's a Whale
Herbie's first night away without parents and sisters was excellent. Tim had grandad duties. I was at a printing course in Tenterden. I drove in at around 9 to find the high street being set up for a weekend Christmas market. The weather wasn't too bad. Storm Bert descended while I was on my course. We had planned to take Herbie to the Bedgebury Lights but it was cancelled. Soooo disappointing.
I showed Herbie the print I made today, He said it looked like a whale. Great title thank you.

Friday, 22nd November 2024 - Pre Paddle
Our grandson arrived for the weekend. We are looking after him while his sister is at a climbing competition in Leeds. It would have been a lot of time in the car for a seven year old. After he had unpacked his clothes, made his bed, added some animals, put his toothbrush in the ensuite and plugged in his nightlight we went to the Aquarium in Hastings. It was a fun visit but I always feel a bit sorry for the animals in the tanks. It was a lovely sunny afternoon. We wandered to the beach. Herbie persuaded Tim to get close to the waves - a little bit too close they both got wet! Luckily I had put a change of clothes in the car for Herbie. We swung by Tim's sisters house on the way home for tea and chocolate brownie. I am typing after putting a very tired little boy to bed. Fingers crossed for a quiet night. We have a busy day ahead.
Last day of Kalie Graves challenge. Another day of blue. Blue sea and blue sky. It's been a great challenge. Thank you.

Thursday, 21st November 2024 - 'Hey there Mr Blue'
Another overcook of breakfast eggs due to user error. We had eggs for lunch.
I have the most charming magnetic seagull holding my list to the fridge. Thank you Lindsey I love it and the bird seed. Over a mug of tea we watched the battle of the birds and squirrels through the window as a flurry of snow fell. That sounds so poetic! It was.
Herbie is coming to stay for the weekend. Soooo looking forward to adventures with him. He is staying in one of the bed and breakfast rooms. I have removed all electrical appliances and locked them in another room. He is very inquisitive seven year old and a natural engineer. What fun he would have with a kettle/TV and radio. We have new books, slippers and bath toys for him.
After my eggy lunch it was very tempting to light the fire and lummox with my book on the sofa but I dragged on my wellies and spent a couple of hours raking leaves in the garden. My bobble hat and jacket got jettisoned after a few minutes. I felt so much better for a blast of oxygen and cold air.
I am watching The Resident - yes again - it's a long series. Love it and sharing my experience with my brother through WhatsApp.
Week 3 Day 4 of Kalie Graves challenge is blue. The sky was beautiful today.

Wednesday, 20th November 2024 - Cherries
Wow what a beautiful morning. Stunning sunrise over a frosty garden. That got me out of bed - plus the need for tea and a wee. Yes and in that order.
Our chickens are laying an egg a day. Having four hens that is a lot of eggs. My guests had scrambled eggs for breakfast and I soft boiled nine eggs for my lunch over the next few days. The clutch of eggs is receding. Michael Mosley said that a boiled egg is a good alternative to a packet of crisps!!!! Can't quite see the similarity but I have plenty of crisp substitutes in the fridge.
The new audio book I had was like listening to a load of fluff. Total meaningless drivel. I gave up and have started a new murder mystery which is much more entertaining. I needed it while I was printing the last of our Christmas cards.
Tim came home from Brussels with a gift of a bottle of gin, a bottle of Kreik and a bar of dark chocolate. Week 3 Day 3 I have chosen fruit for Kalie Graves challenge. My bottle of Kreik is cherry flavoured.

Tuesday, 19th November 2024 - Blue and Yellow make Green
I am a little jealous of my son. In Benenden we have had heavy rain and wind. Tom has had lovely snow in Northampton.
I like knitting but not done for ages. I follow Sabrina-Rose Benedict on Instagram. She makes amazing blankets and more by finger knitting. Quite mesmerising to watch. A few weeks ago she posted 'guess the number of balls of wool' for her Stuffies - adorable animals. Wow, I guessed correctly and she has sent me an Ollie the Octopus kit. It arrived yesterday all the way from the US. Beautifully packed with tutorials and instructions. I will have fun making it. Who will I give it to?
Today's postcard is of my octopus prize. Another day of pushing the boundaries. Kalie Graves challenge choice for today is 'blue'. I needed blue watercolour with yellow to make the green I used in my painting.

Monday, 18th November 2024 - Mine all Mine
I bought some red roses to put in the bed and breakfast room. I have kept them for myself. The guests to have alternative flowers.
The Viridians met up today. I couldn't go as I was waiting for a delivery. Do you get FOMO? The frustrating thing was the delivery was late - very late. Damn it I could have been with my painting buddies.
I heard today that another of our friends have had an offer on their house and will be moving away. That makes two recently and I know one other has itchy feet. Makes me think maybe I would like to move? I am very happy where I am and Tim has just painted the windows so I am staying put. I look forward to visiting them in their new homes.
Today is Week 3 Day 1 of Kalie Graves art challenge. I am going with the prompt of floral. I have kept it monochrome to match my mood. I have got blue and vegetable to explore. It has been great seeing the other artists work. Very inspiring.

Sunday, 17th November 2024 - Mycobiota
I set my robot hoover off and went to have a shower. They are meant to be time saving devices but not when you spend 20 minutes looking for the damn thing to find it has wrapped itself up in the Alexa wire. Maybe there is an assignation going on between the two?
Tim is in Brussels for a couple of days. I have hinted I would like a bottle of Kreik beer. I will let you know if it materialises.
I made bread and a cherry cake for bed and breakfast guests. They didn't want any cake!!! I am going to have to freeze it before I eat another slice.
I had a dinner of salmon on couscous with a glass of red wine. Even though Tim was not with me I was not alone. Conrad from The Resident kept me company. Nothing better than a medical drama on a Sunday evening.
I have been raking leaves in the sunshine. There was some amazing fungi growing where I dumped the leaves. Week 2 of Kalie Graves art challenge they made perfect well behaved models. Green combined with texture made from cling film.

Saturday, 16th November 2024 - Gin for Recovery
I thought it was Sunday today. My son corrected me when I asked if he was having a good Sunday!!! I have an extra day which is excellent.
Adriene took me through an hour long yoga session. Just over halfway through the battery died on my computer. I was very tempted to give up and go and have a coffee. I was so proud of myself. I folded some washing and put our knickers in the drawers. Long enough for Adriene to recharge. I went back into being a warrior and very pleased when we ended with a corpse pose.
I have been printing Christmas cards to send out to friends and family. Little Holt provided me with the space but it was damn chilly. With a bobble hat, thermal socks and a coat I was perfectly warm printing over 130 linoprints.
Today's postcard is for a very good friend who is going through a difficult time. She loves a Bombay Sapphire and tonic. Just what is needed when times are tough. It also ties in with Kalie Graves art challenge of shiny.

Friday, 15th November 2024 - A Maple Tree for Good Luck and Prosperity
Tim and I planned to go out today. It is now gone 8pm and we didn't venture further than the bottom of the garden. The trees are busy dropping their leaves. We have three acres and over half of it is planted with trees. Many trees many leaves. The garden does look pretty with a carpet of yellow/orange foliage. Unfortunately it ruins the grass and makes the paths slippery. I hate falling over. We raked up five builders bags from the drive today. That's my cardio done for the day!
Week 2 Day 5 of Kalie Graves art challenge I have gone with texture. We have a maple tree in the garden that is stunning at the moment with its show of red leaves. I used a bristle brush for the texture of the leaves as taught to me by Graham Lock.

Thursday, 14th November 2024 - Mylor Churchtown, Falmouth
Harriet was with us for coffee. I set her to work sticking prices on my greetings cards and winding wool. Last autumn I made myself a lovely chunky knit cardigan. It was enormous. The wool is lovely. I am unknitting it. I plan to get at least two jumpers and possibly a hat?!? I enjoy knitting and look forward to my project. I took Harriet into the dentist for a tooth removal. I was concerned she would be shocked as it was a big back one. The tooth was in much better condition than anticipated. I took her back to our house and set her to work again. I really miss her company from when she lived next door and we chatted over our morning coffee.
This evening I was with WOKAS at a guided pastel landscape demonstration by Judy Tippler. Not my media so I was feeling apprehensive. I went as I had the tea and coffee bag. It turned out to be one of those unexpected enjoyable evenings. We have a very friendly interesting group of artists that have built up over the past few years. Great fun.
Today's Connected Postcard is of Falmouth where we went in August. I liked the fields and the lonely sailing boat. A hesitant pastel. It is going under the vague remit of 'green' for Kalie Graves art challenge.

Wednesday, 13th November 2024 - Survived the Gastropods
My bed and breakfast guests requested scrambled and poached eggs. Scrambled perfect. Poached was another matter. The water was too hot. I put the eggs in too slowly. The yolk and white departed company. Guess what Tim and I had for breakfast? I redeemed myself with the next ones that were well behaved and the guests were none the wiser.
Harriet kept me entertained while I was making beds with a video call. Thank you for keeping me company.
Today's Connected Postcard is a combination of Kalie Graves art challenge textile and Amy Maricle's slow drawing mindful session 'pincushion'. Inspiration came from a leggy chrysanthemum that has battled slugs, snails, wind and rain battling on to eventually flower.

Tuesday, 12th November 2024 - Eucalyptus to Negate the Negative
Yesterday I saw no one. Today people have been coming and going all day. Tim went out and returned with paint, wood filler, hooks and six bottles of wine. Tony came to collect our rotten window drip bars and gave us an oven ready pheasant. He's going to make new ones. Clive and John came to look at possible lights for the next WOKAS art exhibition. A very jolly parcel delivery driver who could hardly see out his windows for packages dropped off tins of paint. A rained on Amazon delivery driver gave me a parcel for Harriet's advent calendar. A pair of bed and breakfast guests arrived. Tim went out to visit a friend in hospital who now has a new hip.
We have had a quiet evening eating soup Tim made and leftover apple crumble. We are watching a new series Paris has Fallen - excellent so far if a bit violent.
Week 2 and Day 2 of the art challenge. I couldn't decide what to do until I was putting out the recycling and saw the eucalyptus tree looking majestic. Its new leaves are round, older ones are ... well leaf shaped. Interesting I thought. That's my model for today. Oh and my chosen word is 'green'. I still have shiny and texture to explore.

Monday, 11th November 2024 - Fields of Green and Pink
My Tescos delivery man had not qualms about delivering my groceries with me in my yoga kit. It's very old and tatty but soooo comfortable. We are now stocked up with delights for the week. Adriene took me through a very stretchy yoga sequence. She praised me for breathing!. I do hold my breath when concentrating so it was very useful to remind me to breath.
I have been working on a linocut for our Christmas card today. I have had a thoroughly enjoyable time in my studio with Radio 4, then Times Radio and finished with a murder mystery on an audio book. I have great anticipation that it will be delightful.
Today Kalie Graves has set those who are participating three new prompts for this week. We have green, shiny and textile. Day 8 is going to be green. On our walk with Tony and Wendy on Saturday we wandered through some beautiful countryside. I was taken with this view over Rye Foreign with its pink field. I have been twitching to paint it. That's my postcard for today.

Sunday, 10th November 2024 - Tarnished
It has been charmingly quiet at The Holt today. I have made smoked mackerel pate from some bargain purchases we got in Jempsons yesterday. Jempsons is a bit like Marmite - you either love it or hate it. I am not totally in love but do enjoy a wander along their aisles as they have some intriguing bits and pieces. They had loads of Christmas stuff. I was tempted by a felt dragon to hang on our tree. I left it for someone else to enjoy. We also have a Bramley apple crumble. I threw in a few dried cherries. We have a massive bag of them bought for a pheasant recipe. Such a rebel. I think I need to get out more!!!
Today's postcard is of a camellia. Mum gave it to Tim years ago and it had been struggling as I planted it too close to an old hedge. The hedge was taken out a couple of years ago and it is now thriving. I thought it was an unusual prostrate form. I investigated it as I cut a sprig to paint. I think is has just grown horizontal due to hedge abuse. It's just a bog standard autumn flowering form.
Day 7 of Kalie Graves art challenge. I went for metal. I painted a very tiny tarnished silver vase that belonged to my Mum. She used to do the most exquisite cake decorating and won many prizes. This would have adorned a tiered cake with tiny icing flowers in it.

Saturday, 9th November 2024 - Water Works Taproom
I spent this morning in my studio painting greetings cards - robins, bluetits, wrens and long tailed tits. I did a bit of tidying up and came across a box. It contained the ring and necklace Mum was wearing when she died. My stomach and heart did that funny squeezy thing and I shed a few tears. I miss my Mum.
After two soft boiled eggs for lunch Tony and Wendy came and collected us. We drove to Peasmarsh. Armed with a couple of maps covered in many footpaths we headed off. Autumn has arrived. I was glad to be wearing my coat and scarf to keep the chill out. Tim and Wendy led the way across many fields with only a couple of wrong turns. Ten thousand steps later we were back where we started. It just so happened we were right next to the Water Works Taproom. It would have been misjudged not to pop in for a drink and Tony was very thirsty. It was buzzing with wooly hat clad people.
Day 6 of @kalie.graves.art art challenge. Today’s painting could loosely go under the title of metal … there are metal barrels stacked against a wall!!!

Friday, 8th November 2024 - Coffee Pot and Mug
It is just before 7pm and I am sitting typing with the woodburner for company. Tim has gone to the pub with Si and Nick. I have a white wine spritzer so I am not feeling left out of having a Friday night drink. We have found some firelights that are made from wax and wood. So much nicer than the stinky paraffin ones. I was dubious of their ability to light a fire as they are tiny and instructions are for just one. But they are excellent.
Tim and I met Harriet in Cranbrook. We had another look around The Cranbrook Art Show. You must go if you're in the area. It is open tomorrow 10-5pm. We went for coffee in Arthurs. It was full. Wendy's was packed but we found a table. It was so good to talk with Harriet about what they are up to. Very very happy. Very very busy. She is encouraging me to enter some work into The Royal Academy Summer Show - I will if she does. Great fun and exciting.
After leaving Harriet we drove to Merriments. I had read yesterday that they are closing and all the plants are half price. You know how Tim and I like a bargain. There were cars parked along the road, queuing to get into the carpark and a long line of people with plants and trolleys. We turned around and went to Waitrose where I topped up my tangerine supply.

Thursday, 7th November 2024 - Blue Jug and Tangerines
I had a rescheduled date with Alli and Suzy. We met in Cranbrook and wandered around the Cranbrook Art Show. What a beautifully curated exhibition. I was very taken with the wire birds made by Beverley Drury. There was some abstract work. It is an art form that I find very difficult to make without it looking like a two year old did it. Semi abstract is something I would like to have a go at when I have finished my postcard project. After the show we went to Arthur's for a very long chatty lunch. Such a lovely few hours thank you Alli and Suzy.
For Day 4 of Kalie Graves art challenge the theme of fruit was an easy option. I have a bowl of tangerines sitting on the kitchen table in front of me. I teemed them up with my favourite spotty jug. Perfect partners.

Wednesday, 6th November 2024 - Benenden Village in Misty Grey
Refurbishment of the windows continues at The Holt. I have been aiding Tim by putting the screws back in the hinges while he juggles with the windows. None have been broken yet. It is beginning to feel like the 'fourth bridge'. I am very fortunate to have a very jolly husband who is positive. I would be feeling defeated.
We had a delivery of cinnamon buns and tangerines and medicine for me from Lindsey this morning. All she wanted in return was a mug of tea. The exchange was biased towards Tim and I but the buns were delicious.
Tim and I went for a walk to post my Connected Postcards. We met Roger and spent a bit of time at Susan's grave together. So many memories. It was one of those incredibly misty afternoons where the cloud is so low it is dripping on you. A perfect subject for Day 3 of Kalie Graves challenge - 'grey'

Tuesday, 5th November 2024 - Waterdrops in Grey
For today's challenge from Kalie Graves I chose shiny. I am continuing with my Connected Postcard project. For those who might not know about it every day in 2024 I am paining or printing a postcard and sending it the friends and family. I have had some lovely messages from recipients. Some have been sent on, some kept and some framed and put on walls.
I am working on a commission for a friend. It is in the final stages and occupying the desk in my studio. I always get slightly anxious as to how it will be received. I get around this by letting the commissioner decide if they like it or not. If they don't I keep it and don't ask for any payment. If they do I get to buy more tubes of paint.
I have had all my cleaning materials out today. Our double bed and breakfast room has beautifully painted windows - thank you to my husband for an excellent job. I needed to get the rest of the room just as sparkly. Now it is ready for friends to stay on Sunday.

Sunday, 3rd November 2024 - Ancient Fushia
My mind is like a ping pong ball. It goes from one thought to another. Sometimes I don't know what is happening but as long it is happy I am happy.
I wandered into the kitchen with while my L'Oreal hair dye was cooking. Tim was making pasties. He made excess filling that he made into soup. I have been totally spoilt today. The soup was delicious for lunch and we had the pasties that had the best crispy pastry. I had an excellent husband.
We are watching The Resident - not a murder mystery but a medical drama. Tim is being very patient letting me watch the series. His choice next.
Today's postcard is of a fuchsia that we have in a tub on our drive. It is very old and has been with us ofr many year and been through freezing winters and steaming summers, being thrown out of its pot by reversing cars. It still comes back with beautiful ballerina flowers.

Saturday, 2nd November 2024 - Happy Memories
I woke up this morning still feeling full of the delicious dinner Pippa had cooked us last night. I was worried I wouldn't be feeling hungry by lunchtime. Steve and Zoe were dropping in and we had a table booked at the Bell and Jorrocks for lunch. My worries were totally unfounded. The Ploughman's was too good not to eat. Shame I wasn't doing any ploughing this afternoon to burn off the calories.
Tim and I bravely left the warmth of the woodburner and walked to the end of the drive to watch the Benenden fireworks. Then we came back and had soup and toast. The soup was served in the bowls and on oval plates that belonged to Tim's Mum. We had many bowls of Brenda's homemade soup at Wendletrap. Happy memories.

Friday, 1st November 2024 - Foggy Day
Today's postcard is of the foggy morning we had. Later it turned out to be a beautiful day. Mostly due to it being Herbie's 7th birthday. Wow how far that little chap has come in his seven years. I am so proud of him. We were lucky that it is half term so he could come and see us. Delighted that he chose to come to us on his birthday. We had a very happy few hours. I did a simple treasure hunt in the garden. The end was his presents with balloons on the trampoline. I cleared the trampoline of leaves and debris this morning. It's a strange feeling under your feet. Not sure why the children enjoy it quite so much. Harriet made an excellent birthday cake with a candle fountain much to Herb's delight. I do love a birthday. Happy happy birthday Herbie you are a little wonder.
Tonight we off out to Mike and Pippa's for dinner. Perfect to wind down after playing with the grandchildren.

Thursday, 31st October 2024 - Cosmos for Arthur
I have had another day of doing 'stuff' and very important birthday preparation for Herbie's 7th birthday tomorrow. Tim continued his painting window mission. The scaffolding has now been moved to the rear of the house for the next window refurbishment.
This evening I spent the evening with WOKAS. Our president Graham gave a very in depth and informative talk and demonstration on the do and don'ts of watercolour. Loved his tip on using bristle brushes for texture and splatter. It is still one of my favourite mediums to work in. Alison and I were on tea duty as Jenny-the-tea was away.
There is a new grandson amongst our friends. Welcome Arthur. Today's postcard is a linocut of cosmos the birth flower for October.

Wednesday, 30th October 2024 - Cinnamon Buns
I met with Mercedes and Lindsey. I love listening to people's stories. They are so much more interesting than my own. We had chocolate eclairs and my favourite buns - the ones swirled with cinnamon and sugar.
Herbie's birthday is on Friday. He wants to come to our house to celebrate. How lovely is that? I am thinking of doing a treasure hunt and went to this amazing toy shop in Hawkhurst and got some fun bits. There was a lady in there buying presents for her family. She had just turned 100 years old. Wow I thought as I noticed her manicured nails, she was amazing. I should have asked her what tips she had on physical and mental longevity. Now I will never know!!!

Tuesday, 29th October 2024 - Autumn in Portrait
I had a charming morning with Sarah. We had coffee and a shared bacon roll - yes, with chilli jam and then another coffee as we had lots to talk about. Wendy's is our favourite place to meet in Cranbrook. After we headed into the Hospice in the Weald shop. It was packed with people. I had to queue to buy books for my granddaughters and a board game. The volunteer looked shattered and deflated as her colleague said she was off for a sit down leaving the poor woman with a huge queue to deal with. Sarah and I sat on a bench in the sun and tried to decipher how board game for seven year olds worked. It is based on hieroglyphs and has a very cute scarab beetle.
I made the perfect dinner for a Tuesday evening. It was a Michael Mosely thick tasty vegetable soup recipe. Delicious with toast in front of the crackling woodburner.

Monday, 28th October 2024 - Autumn Colours
I love waking up and looking out our bedroom window to see how autumn is turning the trees. Such beautiful colours. Good inspiration for today's postcard.
Tim has been forging on painting our windows. It's been a bigger task with rotten bits of wood needing replacing. They are looking great.
I had a WOKAS committee meeting. We had lunch at The Woolpack which sounds very decadent for a Monday. The crayfish roll I had certainly was. There was an ulterior motive. We were investigating the barn behind the pub to see if would be a suitable venue for our next art exhibition. Looks like with a bit of tweeking it will be perfect.
I love these evenings where we can light the woodburner. We had a new one put in about six months ago. It is going to get good use. There is something very comforting about a fire.

Saturday, 26th October 2024 - Spindleberry
Tea and Lempsip have been keeping my cold under control. It is still hanging on in there and making me a little grumpy. Tim being very patient with my tetchy mood.
I have a busy day filling the greenhouse with pots and pots of tulip and daffodil bulbs. Some from Tescos and the others our gift from The Netherlands. I planted them along with lots of worms. They have old plates on top to keep the mice off.
Tim has been up the scaffolding painting our flaky windows. They are looking very smart ready and protected for an enslaught of the winter weather.
I had a wander around the garden with my coffee and came across loads of spindleberries in the hedges. They are such an odd looking berry with their bright yellow seedy middles. Great for today's postcard.

Friday, 25th October 2024 - Ballerina and Martinette
We had to move an armchair and a sofa out of the kitchen yesterday to make room for a big enough table to seat 16. It does mean that today we have been able to clean places that are hidden under armchairs and sofas. While cleaning I thought about our friends who came last night and what a wonderful group of people they are. We are very fortunate to have such lovely people around us.
The postman gave me a parcel. What a lovely surprise. Guests that stayed with us back in the summer have sent us tulip and daffodil bulbs to brighten up us in the spring. What a thoughtful thing to do. The bulbs are the inspiration for today's postcard.
Tonight's dinner was leftovers of pheasant tagine, coucsous (do you know how easy it is to cook?) and beans followed by stewed apples and nut brittle (eaten with care unless you want a broken tooth). Excellent when you don't feel like cooking.

-Thursday, 24th October 2024 - Dinner Party
Happy 66th birthday to Tim. Now the proud owner of a free bus pass. You will see him waving front the top deck as he passes by when there is a bus as they are very few and far between.
Tim's birthday present from me was to hold a dinner party. I had vowed never to host more than eight friends. Tonight we had 16 of us seated around a very long table. It was a generous gift. I love planning the menu. I love doing the cooking. I love having friends over for dinner. I love making the table look charming with ribbons on the napkins and candles. I don't even mind the clearing up. What I do not like is when they leave and I haven't had a chance to talk to them all evening. Thank you to everyone who came and shared a wonderful evening with us. I will catch up on the missing conversation soon.

Wednesday, 23rd October 2024 - Turmeric Shot
I am recovering from a stinking cold. Lindsey came over with restorative treats. I have healing tea, tangerines with vitamin C, a ginger shot and a turmeric shot. I was a bit apprehensive about the shots but they were surprisingly delightful. Thank you for making me feel better.
Today I have been cooking in preparation for a dinner party tomorrow. I thought of my mum as I was lining the tart tins. She loved cooking. The pheasants are marinading, the coconut tarts cooling and bramley apples stewed.

Tuesday, 22nd October 2024 - Pheasant
It was tempting to hide in the back seat of my guests car. They were off to Dungeness. Unfortunately by the time I had dropped Tim off at the station they had left. I came home with chicken feed, bird seed and four pheasants. Lindsey was on my doorstep which was the perfect timing for a mug of tea. She has given me a book about a Hare. So thoughtful. I can't wait to start reading it.
We have pheasants in the garden. We have oven ready pheasants in the fridge.

Monday, 21st October 2024 - Single Rose
Monday has been a good day to catch up with what Harriet and Tom got up to over the weekend. Excellent and too much for write about. We talked about Christmas plans. I am a big fan of Christmas. We talked about Herbie's birthday plans. I am a big fan of birthdays. Happy children make a happy mother.
Do you ever have FOMO. I have it today. My bnb guests arrived. I asked them as to their plans. They are spending three days visiting gardens and evenings eating at pubs. Sounds very appealing. I will get them to tell me about their days and plan my future days out.
I have roses to put in the bed and breakfast rooms. I kept a single bloom for myself and it has made a lovely model for today's postcard.

Sunday, 20th October 2024 - Adam and Eve's Pears
The local farm shop has its autumn apples and pears back in stock. Tim likes a soft pappy apple. I like a crisp one. There is no fighting over our fruit bowl. The pears are perfect with a chunk of cheddar cheese.
Not much has been happening outside our home today. The wild wind and rain kept us inside where we have been very busy. Tim has been refurbishing our radiators. We are replacing the steel panelled ones with the older 'school' type. They look much more charming. I have been cleaning rooms, washing and ironing while listening to an audio book. Not the most adventurous day but good jobs done.
We have been watching Capital. I found the finish frustrating. Too many stories left dangling.

Saturday, 19th October 2024 - Hare
It was our Weald of Kent Art Society open day and art sale in Tenterden today. 17 charming artists set up their wares. The event is to show the folks of Tenterden what we do and to entice in new members. The rain was incessant this morning but a sunny afternoon brought many visitors, sales and new members. A very jolly event. I did a linocut of a hare during quiet spells. I am going to ask Mike and Pippa for an invitation to their house in Fongrave so I can see a real one.

Friday, 18th October 2024 - Angry Bluetit
I had both bnb rooms to do today. I started with great energy and got one turned around, by the time the second room was vacated I had waned in energy. I wanted to be in my studio getting ready for tomorrow's open day. So I abandoned stripping the bed and cleaning the toilet. My day of arty creating was just what I wanted and needed.
I had a sandwich in the garden. It was so warm for an October day. I watched blue tits battling with the now feisty nuthatch. The blue bits looked sooo cross. Perfect for today's postcard.

Thursday, 17th October 2024 - Foraging for Sorrel
My culinary skills were put to the test this morning with poached eggs, scrambled eggs, toasting bread, baking pain au chocolate and slicing fresh fruit salad. I jest. A full English breakfast is a thing of the past that I do not regret taking off my breakfast menu. And now I get to stay in bed for an extra half an hour.
I have been printing lino prints in my studio. Some have been upside down and back to front. What a messy process. It's very relaxing and pleasing when they come out the right way round. It was text that I was experimenting with today.
A recipe in a soup book got Tim and I on a foraging mission. We were looking for sorrel. The first field yielded very little. Nothing in the woods. A field next to lake was peppered with the delightful spear shaped plants. Our harvest is being make into soup as I type. We are testing a recipe for an upcoming dinner party.
Tonight I am off to watch Tom Marsh demonstrate something in oils with the WOKAS group.

Wednesday, 16th October 2024 - Sweet Chestnuts for Wisdom
I woke up alone. Tim had left and gone to London before my eyes had opened. A mug of tea kept me company to start my Wednesday.
I have been going through photos to make up a poster for the WOKAS Open Day on Saturday. Seeing pictures of the grandchildren as babies, toddlers and the antics they got up to and the defeats they have made me feel squeezy of my heart - I love them so much.
The trees are turning and the ripening sweet chestnuts are being closely watched by the squirrels.

Tuesday, 15th October 2024 - Favourite Fields
I have been in my studio (I love my studio) printing linocut cards for the WOKAS open day this coming Saturday in Tenterden. We are in Highbury Hall that is not the most exclusive of venues but excellent for its location. Pop in is you are passing.
I have been experimenting with our air fryer. It cooks fish tastily. I tried chips to go with our cod. They tasted more like crips. I will persevere.
Today's postcard is of a view of fields that we walk frequently. Sometimes alone, sometimes with Tom and Fable, sometimes with family and sometimes with friends. I would like to show it to Tom's friend when she visits next time.

Monday, 14th October 2024 - Two Scottish Otters
This morning Lindsey dropped in. We had tea. I love hearing about her weekend adventures.
Later Ray came by with a misbehaving phone. It mended itself! Over coffee we chatted about 'to move or not to move'.
Tim and I went for a misty walk through the soggy fields of Benenden this afternoon. We both needed to stretch our lazy legs.
Bill, my bed and breakfast guest, knew of my passion for making art. He paid with a Scottish ten pound note as he thought I would like the image on the back of two otters. I did and do. Today's postcard is my linocut interpretation of the otters. Thank you Bill for your thoughtfulness.

Sunday, 13th October 2024 - Nigel's Russets
We had an excellent meal at a very busy and friendly Salehurst Halt last night. Sarah and I shared a many layered starter with crispy choizo, black pudding, avocado, black beans on a tiny round of flat bread - absolutely delicious. The rose wine was pétillant which I like very much. I had short rib baised beef with a rich sauce and polenta with shavings of parmesan. Chatting with friends is a lovely way to spend a Saturday evening. I slept very well and had to set my alarm so I was up and ready to poach eggs for our bnb guests.
Tim has been hedge cutting. I gave a hand with the clearing and started a bonfire that quickly turned from flames to smoke to nothing at all. It needs to dry out a lot. I love a bonfire. It is ready for attention on another day.
Nigel gave Tim a bag of his favourite apples. They are russets. The perfect model for today's postcard.

Saturday, 12th October 2024 - Hesperantha coccinea that's not coccinea
Lindsey gave me this plant a few years ago. I have divided it and have four pots in my greenhouse. At this time of year it sends up spears of pink flowers. It should be put out into the garden but so many plants disappear in our flower beds I don't want to risk losing it to the slugs/snails/deer or rotting in our water clogged clay. I might be a devil and plant one out as an experiment. It's name is and isn't correct. It is a hesperantha coccinea but coccinea means red and mine is triumphant in its pinkness.
We have sparkling windows, weatherboard and cars. Tim got his brush with its hose attachment out!!!!
I must go and change my blouse and put on my green necklace. We are off to dinner with Sarah and Nigel at The Salehurst Halt. I am very much looking forward to an evening out. Tim had lobster risotto at The Savoy last night. That is probably not on the menu this evening. I will tell you any intriguing stories tomorrow.

Friday, 11th October 2024 - Lucky Black Cat
Lindsey and I headed into Tenterden this morning. We were on a mission to find a small gift to post to our brother. He's not feeling at his best and had to cancel a trip to see us a while ago. We both love a wander around the shops. We were examined the glorious books in Waterstones. I returned a blouse to White Stuff and got cash back in my wallet. I returned a bag to another shop and left annoyed that I had been given a credit note. Brett and James are replacing some very very rotten timber beams in one of the shops. Brett came up with the marvellous idea of getting Chris some Tiger balm. Excellent. We found it in Boots with vitamin D tablets and a little gift for my advent calendar collection for Harriet, this is a secret so don't tell her!!! The Grape Tree added to our shopping with roasted nuts. Nutmeg was a perfect place to stop for frothy coffee and a shared pork roll. Thank you Lindsey. I was just a bit envious of Lindsey. She was spending the afternoon making an autumn wreath. BUT I remembered that I have the charming lavender wreath that Alli made me on my door so wouldn't have room for another. Enviousness averted.
This evening I am alone as Tim is at an awards dinner at The Savoy. I hope he brings me home a truffle. I watched a stupid romance that made me cry while eating a steak that caught fire under the grill. It had a nice charred crust. When I had stopped crying I spread myself out on the dining room table with my lino cutting blades and spent a happy time cutting a cat. This I will send to my cousin Susan as she is a lover of cats.

Wednesday, 9th October 2024 - Salmon
I had an excellent yoga session with Adriene before meeting Gay in Cranbrook for coffee. Her youngest daughter has just got married. It looked like a wonderful celebration. Congratulations to Rhi and Ollie. Gay wore a red and blue trouser suit that was fabulous. I am just a little bit envious. She looked amazing,
Tony dropped some bits of wood round yesterday. Tim is making shoe racks. Our shoes have been congregating by the back door for ages with no home. They will now reside vertically in our utility room. I made him tea and baked cinammon buns that we ate at our garden table that is soon to be packed away for winter. These last few sunny autumn days are glorious.
We had salmon for dinner. I cut a lino interpretation of our salmon while watching a detective series this evening. The salmon was my inspiration for today's postcard.

Tuesday, 8th October 2024 - Cyclamen for Love and Affection
The winter cyclamen have started to flower under the trees in the garden. They are lovely bright little patches of colour as the garden fades to autumn. They are a symbol of love and affection. We can all do with a bit of that.
I am really enjoying doing some lino cuts. I need to colour the lino so I can see the cuts better. My latest attempt at using green acrylic ink looked good but came off and I was left with very green hands. Going to try acrylic paint next.
As I type this evening the rain is hammering down outside. It is so loud it is making it difficult to listen to The Resident. Lots of drama this evening in the ER

Monday, 7th October 2024 - Spiced Cauliflower with Pea Yogurt
Fish and lizard were today's yoga poses with Adriene today. I tried my best and didn't pass out from holding my breath in concentration. Great fun even if my head wont get anywhere near my knee.....yet.
It has been a day of jobs. Emails and ironing top of my list. Done and crossed off. The bnb rooms will have to wait until tomorrow as I had no enthusiasm to tackle them. My arms are sore from flu and covid vaccines.
This evening I made roasted spiced cauliflower with pea yogurt to go with last nights fish curry. It reminded me of Tom as the last time I made it was when he was with us. I miss our talks and walks with Fable.

Sunday, 6th October 2024 - Benenden Allotment Open Day
Tim and I spent the sunny part of the day gardening, clearing and weeding. We have exposed part of the garden that has been overtaken by brambles and exuberant treelings. I planted a couple of hydrangeas and a little shrub that has lost its label which makes it all the more intriguing.
This afternoon we walked into the village to find Tony and Wendy. They were at the Open Day for the new Benenden Allotments. It was a drizzly but the tea and chocolate cake made up for it. It was impressive what keen gardening and a lot of spade work can be achieved in less than a year. As we were a little damp from the rain we decided to pop into The Bull for a warm up before we ventured the walk home.

Saturday, 5th October 2024 - The Brede Steam Giants
What a glorious sunny morning for a bit of weeding. I tidied up around our pond. Tim did some more major bramble and sapling removal. The plants in our garden must be related to triffids they grow so fast.
We had an unusual afternoon. With Lindsey, Tony and Wendy we parked by Brede church and walked to see The Brede Steam Giants. They are water pumping engines. One is an impressive 35 feet high. The day got better with tea, cake and cheese scones in the cafe. I learnt a lot about how water was drawn out the ground and pumped from Brede to Fairlight. It was much more interesting than I anticipated. We plan to take Herbie our grandson in the future he would be fascinated. We walked through cattle filled fields to The Red Lion for a couple of drinks. The food looked good so we plan to return. Thank you Tony and Wendy for suggesting today's outing.

Friday, 4th October 2024 - Inspiration
I had my last walk with Tom, Fable and the whistling frisbee this morning before he returned to Northampton. It has been lovely having him to stay. The last four weeks have gone in a flash. We came back to find Lindsey in the garden. Perfect timing for coffee for me and tea for Lindsey. We sat in the sunshine which was an October treat.
I watched the last art Webinar with Michelle Armas. It was using inks and watercolour on raw canvas. I have some canvas in my studio that I have never used. Now I will. Today's postcard is made with liquid watercolour. It comes in tiny bottles with droppers that are impossible to control. I had great fun and I hope that Akira likes it.

Thursday, 3rd October 2024 - Cote du Rhone Villages
At 4pm I started making a fish pie ready for eating with Tom this evening so we could go for an early evening drink with Mike at Pippa at The Ewe and Lamb. We had to have an extra round of drinks as we had much to catch up on.
We are watching The Resident. I love a medical drama. Great way to end the day.
This painting is of a red wine we like and it is even better when on offer for our local retailer.

Wednesday, 2nd October 2024 - Fish going Abstract
I tackled a Rebirth yoga this morning. Blimey I am as stiff as an old board. I thought it was very appropriate as it is my son, Tom's, 37th birthday today. We had a late breakfast together. I had plans for a delicious Eggs Royale with a side of spinach and bacon. It was ok but the hollandaise I made but a bit thin in taste and texture. It didn't detract from the joy of celebrating Tom's birthday. We finished with a carrot cake topped with gold leaf from Tom's friend that was perfect for candles and a happy birthday song. Happy Birthday Tom.
I am doing a webinar short course with Michelle Armas. For five days she gives a tutorial on painting abstract. This is something I would love to do but really struggle with the concept. Today's postcard is for Digby, a friend's four years old grandson and very very loosely based on the lesson from Michelle.

Tuesday, 1st October 2024 - Campton Oast
I was back in my yoga gear this morning. I did yoga for mobility with Adriene thinking it would be an easy 23 minutes. I had forgotten how hard it is being a lizard, cat, cow, dog and eagle.
The rain held off just long enough for me to paint today's postcard. It was the last en plein air session of the year with WOKAS. Such a shame more members didn't turn up. Thank you Wendy for hosting it at your home.
Tim and I went to Wickhambreaux this afternoon. Harriet and I chatted while building a Brio track in readiness for Herbie's return from school. Such a wonderful toy. Herbie was the first to be collected and had an excellent day of playing and learning. He took me on a journey around the playground hopping, jumpng, hop scotch ending with a sprint!!! I was impressed by our agility. Raffy was next to arrive after a successful two bus journey home. Hetty was later as the bus was full and her phone ran out of data. Well done girls getting yourselves home safely. So proud of my grandchildren.

Monday, 30th September 2024 - Coffee Pot
I had a chat with someone today. They didn't know about by Connected Postcard Project. I thought that many of you may not either. So here it is ..... Every day for the 366 days of this year I am painting/printing a postcard and sending it to family, friends old and new. They can keep them or send them onto a friend. I have had some wonderful replies.
What a treat of a day it's been. I got up and put on my yoga kit. After a mug of tea, putting away the shopping Tescos delivered and a coffee, Adriene and I spent 46 minutes on the yoga mat. I haven't done any yoga for weeks. I stretched bits that I haven't stretched for ages and it felt so good.
I had a zoom meeting with a couple of other artists, I wasn't sure what to expect. It was great to talk about art to other people who understand our passion even if it is our favourite brush. I did a linocut of a coffee pot while we were zooming.
This evening Tim was in London. Tom cooked me the most delicious meal of creamy mushroom pasta topped with perfectly cooked steak. We ate it watching Back to Black drinking a glass or two of white wine. Thank you Tom I very much appreciated being cooked for.

It is our anniversary today. Seven years ago we got married on a windy but sunny day in the lighthouse at Dungeness. It was a very happy day.

Saturday, 28th September 2024 - Logs at Howfield
We are looking after friends hens while they are holidaying in Italy. Tim and I fed the chickens and collected their eggs. A perk of our job is that they are very keen and competent gardeners. We have had red and yellow tomatoes, courgettes and raspberries. Fabulous.
This afternoon we swung by High Brooms to do a bit of shopping in Aldi and return some plumbing bits to Toolstation. The rest of the afternoon and early evening we spent at Nick and Alli's with Si, Lesley, Mick and Lucy. Nick had enticed some crayfish into a net with tinned sardines. After a purge and a plunge into boiling water we peeled them. They were delicious fried in butter, garlic and chilli. Alli cooked us a mutton curry and a veggie one. She is a wonderful cook. Lucy had made a massive and very yummy frangipane tart. Very lovely it was drizzled with her homemade damson gin sauce. Such talented friends.
I am very very proud of our granddaughter Raffy who came second in her climbing competition today. Harriet sent me a video of her climbing with harness and ropes and had four climbs with only one attempt at each one. Amazing. Well done Raffy.

Friday, 27th September 2024 - Cornus kousa with Fruit
I thoroughly highly recommend you go and see Abba Voyage. We had a fantastic afternoon/evening yesterday with Si and Lesley celebrating Lesley's birthday. We met them on the train. We were drinking our gin and tonic when the train stopped in a tunnel. There was a bit of smoke which had caused a passenger to panic and pull the communication cord. Si had said they had seen a steam train passing through Paddock Wood earlier. The smoke got caught in the tunnel. Panic averted although Lesley did a rapid downing of her G&T. After a few train changes and following Tim's guidance we arrived in Pudding Mill Lane. The meal and drinks at Jim and Tonic at The Print House was the perfect start to our adventure. Lesley and I had a flight of gin - three different gins and a little tonic. After my meal I had a very delicious Expresso Martini. It cost more than Tim's pizza ... but it was sooooo worth it. The Abba Voyage experience was incredible.The holograms were amazing and so realistic. The music old and new was great. What a fantastic time. You must go.
Today has been a very very soggy one. Lindsey came with sticky lemon tarts and pastel de natas. So delicious. We had tea and coffee while we nattered. Thank you so much for dropping in and sharing your stories.
I found a quick recipe using the butternut squash I had living in my vegetable basket. Two hours later it was ready.
Today's postcard is of the tree that I grew from seed. It is now 30 years old and flourishing and has some unusual looking fruit. I have looked it up on Google and they are edible. I think I will do a bit more research before tucking in.

Thursday, 26th September 2024 - Jim and Tonic at The Print House
I am typing this just after midday. It's going to be a late one tonight. I don't want to blog at midnight.
My guests had their breakfast before going off to feed the gorillas at Port Lympne. I am intrigued. I will be quizzing them about it over breakfast tomorrow.
Mark the Miele technician arrived. I took him upstairs to my bedroom where my roller iron resides. It was working perfectly when he tried it. Damn. It was hiding it's intermittent fault out of shame. He has replaced various parts. I have given it a test drive and so far all good.
Knowing we are going to Jim and Tonic at The Print House this evening today's postcard is of the restaurant - shame there were no people in the image I found. I have used a new ink pen that has a bent nib. I saw it on Instagram being used for pen and ink drawing. It is an odd one.
I need to change into something suitable for watching Abba. Talk later.

Wednesday, 25th September 2024 - Bumble Bee on Basil
I have baked bread and chocolate brownies for new guests arriving. I had just put the brownies in the oven when my lovely sister dropped in for tea. It is Lindsey's recipe and I still use the card she wrote out for me years ago. It is looking a bit smudged but I love it. Always great to have a drop-in friend.
Cutting flowers with secateurs to make the bnb room charming I secateured my finger - just a little bit but it is damn annoying having to wear a plaster that keeps getting wet. I have tried for lots of sympathy. I got a bit.

Tuesday, 24th September 2024 - Tiny Fungi on a Twig
It's been a quiet day in Benenden. I caught up with lots of 'stuff'.
Harriet was in Cranbrook having her teeth shined. She dropped by afterwards. Fable was beside himself with delight to see her with lots of jumping about and happy tail wagging. I was delighted to see her too but kept my emotions more muted. We had coffee at Little Holt with Tom. I left the siblings to catch up. Back home I did a couple of hours of ironing shirts and blouses that I had been putting off. It is a tedious task. It didn't help that I am not thrilled with the book I am listening to. Any suggestions for a good murder/mystery/thriller please.
Today's postcard is of a tiny twig with tiny fungi Harriet found in our garden. She foraged some big white ones from our woodland edge and took them to Michael for identification. His advice was not to eat them as they can put you in a coma - good advice.
I cooked mussels for dinner. No chips. I cooked some little potatoes and we had them squished under the mussels to soak up the juice.

Monday, 23rd September 2024 - Brunch and Brew
I woke up at 6.30am - far too early to get up I decided so I closed my eyes for a little doze. Next time I looked at the time it was 8.30 am. Children sleep a lot when they are going through a growth spurt. Unfortunately, I seem to be growing but widthways.
I met Pippa and June for coffee and cake in the newly opened Brunch and Brew. It was packed. It was good to see Pippa looking beautiful and youthful looking June. We missed Linda who is the corner of our quartet. I bought a blouse from The White Stuff. I have decided I don't like it now I have got it home. I also bought a shoulder phone bag. I don't like that now I have got it home. I will be returning them both.
Back home I plugged in my audio book and did some weeding. No need to cook dinner tonight as Tim mistakingly turned Tom's freezer off. Tom turned the contents of his freezer (minus the Fable's meat) into a very welcome meal. I do love being cooked for. Thank you Tom it was delicious.

Sunday, 22nd September 2024 - Cousins and their Dogs
Lightening and thunder woke me up in the night. I went down to the kitchen to check Fable was ok. He was curled up sleeping on his bed. Not a dog bothered by storms. This morning he checked both doors at Little Holt to see if Tom was home. He refused his breakfast, wasn’t tempted by his stinky tripe treats and sat and watched me throw his frisbee!!! He was delighted to have Tom home and so was I. I don’t like to see him sad.
The community apple orchard in Iden Green was holding an open day. Tim, Tom, Fable and I dropped by and met Lindsey, Alice and Roni. The cider was very drinkable. I had a pint and fell asleep when I got home.
I am typing being bombarded by moths. It is tipping it down with rain outside but warm so we have the top of the stable door open hence the moth intrusion.

Saturday, 21st September 2024 - Great Achievement
Tim and I went to the Ploughing Match with Fable. I got a coffee with Fable in tow only to loose the Morris. We went on a search to find them. Fable decided that he was going no further and stopped. He's a big strong dog and no pulling or coxing would get him to move until he was ready. So I stood like a lemon in the heat, it was a sunny morning, until he deemed it ok to us carry on. Tom, Jon and Cass were cycling 55 miles from London to Brighton raising money for charities while I was watching the Weald of Kent Morris eating ice-cream. Well done, a wonderful achievement.
We dropped by the Bell and Jorrocks on our way home from the ploughing at Honey Farm and had an impromptu lunch with Nick and Suzy. I had the most delicious ham and mustard sandwich. What a treat. Great pub.

Friday, 20th September 2024 - Oak and Sheep beyond The Halfway House
The torrential rain, lightning and thunder was not what my weather app forecast this morning. It passed and I met my good friend Sarah for coffee. Wendy's in Cranbrook is the best for sharing a bacon roll with a side of chilli jam. We haven't seen each other for many many weeks. She still looks the same. We had another coffee as we had lots to catch up on. We parted with the promise of getting together for dinner with Nigel and Tim.
I came home and spent a happy hour or so in my studio doing a linocut. It is of an aster which is the birth flower of September. Four misprints and I was happy with the birthday card I made for Lesley.
The Halfway House garden was warm enough to sit in this afternoon drinking gin and tonic and beer with Nick, Alli, Si, Lesley and Fable who laid under the table. We have a dinner date set at Nick and Alli's with crayfish from their lake on the menu.

Friday, 20th September 2024 - Tea at Hole Park
I have scrambled guests eggs for the last time for a few days. I look forward to pottering around in my slippers and dressing gown drinking copious cups of tea in the mornings.
After a couple of mugs of stimulating coffee I stripped beds and scrubbed showers. Feeling virtuous I had a break to read my new art book. I am full of inspiration to make something big and abstract.
This afternoon we drove to Dingleden to walk with Tony and Wendy. It was sunny and surprisingly too warm to be wearing jeans. The others were sensibly in shorts. We walked along brambly footpaths, good thing I was wearing jeans, to Hole Park where we stopped for tea before heading through Christmas tree fields back to Dingleden.
While eating homemade bean and feta burgers Tim and I watched About Time with Tom and Fable. Great film with Bill Nighy if you need feel good watch.

Wednesday, 18th September 2024 - Book and Dahlias
I love these warm sunny autumn days with the nights drawing in. Nearly time to light the woodburner.
You might not ever see me again as my ironing pile is voracious in its growth. I now have to wait eight more days for my roller iron to be fixed. Yesterday's technician cancelled. Then you wont see me because I will be ironing. So frustrating.
After a weeding session I framed pictures and delivered them to Bayliss & Co, we went shopping with my Tescos Clubcard and stocked up on wine, flour and tinned pilchards. This afternoon I made courgette and tomato soup that we had while watching Nightsleeper - the verdict is out as to whether it is a good watch.

Tuesday, 17th September 2024 - Houses on Woodchurch Green
I have found my drypoint plates that I have been searching for. This afternoon I got some framed ready to take into Bayliss & Co in Tenterden. It is run by Beth who has curated the most wonderful selection of work from local artists and I am very privileged to be one of them.
Late morning/early afternoon I sat with a group of artists from WOKAS on the village green in Woodchurch. The wind blew canvases off their easels but we braved it out for our art. I drew today's postcard of the houses around the green then turned 180 degrees and set out painting a watercolour of the church. I miss calculated. My painting is missing the church. I had a lovely few hours.
It has been months since our book group with Alli and Lesley have met. This evening we got together at The Halfway House to discuss Weyward by Emilia Hart which was brief as it was ages since we read it. I ate much needed liver and bacon. Alli has given us The Appeal by Janice Hallett to read in the form of a proper book with pages. The next book group will be closer in time so hopefully are memories of the book will provide a bit more discussion. We did find lots of other very important things to chat about

Monday, 16th September 2024 - The Last Raspberries
I had a shockingly early breakfast. I am used to a bit of a lie-in. 7.40am and my guest was ready for coffee and scrambled eggs. He is delightful. At least it meant I had many hours in my day to clean out my studio where the mice have been partying.
Tim, Tom and Fable went for an afternoon walk - no whistling frisbee today. It is a good time to chat and catch up.

Sunday, 15th September 2024 - A Sunday Stroll
I woke up to the smell of croissant. After breakfast we wellied up and went out into another sunny day for a walk around Benenden with Jo and Elaine, Tom and Fable joined us.
It could have been the last lunch we have in the garden. Tim had made soup which was accompanied by a variety of cheese, rolls and blueberry chilli jam. Oh and pickled onions that I had a craving for.
Jo and Elaine have returned to London. It has been a lovely weekend. Having friends to stay is an excellent reason for exploring, entertaining and eating.
I have been catapulted back into hosting bed and breakfast guests.

Saturday, 14th September 2024 - Garden at Lamb House
After drinking two mugs of tea and a coffee I was ready for the day. We took Jo and Elaine to Rye Harbour and walked thousands of steps around the nature reserve in the gently autumn sun. The cormorants were most entertaining. The Boson's Bite was the perfect place to stop for sandwiches. The seals weren't in the harbour today. Back in Rye town we visited Lamb House making the most of our National Trust cards. What a charming place. Elaine's exuberance has inspired me to read books by Henry James and E F Benson who both resided there. A hot chocolate at Knoops has been put on the to-do list for a future date as we ran out of time.
We got home to find apple juice from Malcolm and Margaret's apple trees which was perfect with ice, sparkling water and a slice of cherry and almond cake Tim had made.
This evening we went to The Woodcock with Lindsey for dinner. I had some very tasty lamb. It was buzzing with people. Back home the heating was needed for a boost of warmth while we sat drinking tea, whisky and triple sec. I am ready for my bed.

This morning I spent preparing tomato tarte tatin, fish chowder and bramley apple crumble for a dinner of 8 or 9. This afternoon we picked up Jo and Elaine from Staplehurst station and made the most of their National Trust membership by taking them to Sissinghurst Castle Gardens. After a wander around the garden we had a drink in The Three Chimneys which is the best pub for a dimming afternoon. We had very lovely evening with very lovely friends I am ready for bed.

Thursday, 12th September 2024 - Asters for Kindness and Love
I love having bnb guests and I love not having bnb guests. We have a break of a few days which is delightful. Friends are coming to stay. I can wander unhindered in my PJs in the morning which would be totally inappropriate for paying guests.
Tim and I went out with a shopping list. Three hours later and we returned with extra things in our basket and some missing.
Mike and Pippa met us at The Ewe and Lamb in Rolvenden. We celebrated Pippa and Herbie being signed off from their consultants. Amazing. I am so proud of you both.
There is a film playing in the background as I type. Tom is working on a bit of coding. Tim's eyes are heavy. I have no idea what is going on!!! I don't think it is a very riveting watch.
I like a list. I have one for our evening meal tomorrow with good friends. I have one for food preparation. I know I will be awake in the night wondering what I have missed.

Wednesday, 11th September 2024 - Evening Walk
Tim did some major pruning of many shrubs this morning. Lindsey popped round for a cup of tea. We sat on the bench watching Fable and Fritha playing. I handed her some leather gloves to fend off the shrubs spikes so she could help me tidy and clear Tim's cuttings. Thank you for helping out. It is a job that I rather detest.
Tim cooked me one of my favourite meals tonight. Spinach and eggs baked in a white sauce. Just perfect for a Wednesday evening.
I am typing my blog drinking a G&T that I made earlier. Tom suggested I put in the fridge and could have it after we had been for an evening walk. I was hesitant about going as it was getting dark and my home seemed so cosy. I did go and had a thoroughly lovely time, chatted with a neighbour and listened to owls twit twooing. My G&T tastes the better for it. Thank you Tom.

Tuesday, 10th September 2024 - Ready for the Chop
I tried ironing my bnb bedding with my push along iron. Tim said I should wait until my roller iron is mended next Tuesday. I rejected his idea. After 15 minutes of still wrinkled duvet covers I conceded defeat. I think I will hang fire until my roller iron is fixed!!!
Harriet gave me some yellow courgettes. I chopped them up with tomatoes, red onion, red peppers, olives and anchovies and baked them. They were very delicious with salmon and jacket potatoes. Tom joined us. I love cooking for Tim and Tom after they have had a day of work.

Monday, 9th September 2024 - Satsumas in a Blue Bowl
Guests have gone. Our 88year old guest was full of life. Her advice was to keep busy and positive for a happy life. She was going home for a game of Whist and fish and chips. A fantastic philosophy.
I have someone coming to fix my Miele roller iron in a couple of weeks time. I bought it 21 years. Will they fix it??? If not I might give up bed and breakfast. After a session of ironing today with board and iron I am not keen to keep that up.
I have been looking where to get my daffodil and tulip bulbs from for potting up this autumn. B&Q seem to be the best place. Anyone know anywhere better let me know.
We are watching a psychological film drama, called The Lost Daughter, with Olivia Coleman who seems to be able to morph into any character. It's weird and disturbing, I am not sure the best thing to be watching on a Monday evening. I cooked Carrot and Feta burgers for dinner. They sound odd but they were very delicious with taziki, burger buns I made in the bread maker, and salad and homemade chips. Tom and Fable left us after dinner as he had work to do and wasn't taken with our film choice.
My tangerines in a blue bowl were the inspiration for today's postcard. I liked the colour combination.

Sunday, 8th September 2024 - Missing their Brother
Damn and damn again. My loved and cherished Miele roller iron rolls but does not heat up any longer. It needs to have an urgent repair to its heating elements. It's going to take me ages ironing bedding with my push along iron. Damn again. A walk with Tim, Tom, Fable and his whistling frisbee made me feel a whole lot better.

Saturday, 7th September 2024 - The hues of Dahlias
My guests had scrambled and poached eggs and out the door ready for their day of touristing the sights.
Tim and I have spent a wonderful afternoon and evening celebrating Alex and Esther's wedding in Rotherfield. Tim knew the area but it was an enigma to me. I love exploring new places and it is less than an hour from our doorstep. It was a beautiful church wedding with a stunning bride and groom. The reception has caused many a headache for family and friends due to the venue being in a field that got sodden by the past few days torrential rain. Six tonnes of wood chippings and a couple of extra tents and we were none the wiser it all looked perfect to us. Congratulations to Alex and Esther. It was lovely being with good friends and catching up with those infrequent ones. We have plans for more adventures together.
Today's postcard is a reflection of the dahlias that Esther and Alex had grown for the wedding. They were stunning and not a slug or snail in sight.

Friday, 6th September 2024 - The Ivy Barn
I am typing after a varied day. I have a little glass of red wine that is perfect.
We had torrential rain, lightening and thunder as I was showering and getting dressed this morning. I was grateful that it abated on my drive to Wickhambreaux. Harriet drove Herbie and I to Dover Hospital. He was so so so very brave. Harriet was so so so very brave. I was so so so very proud. He has been signed off after his accident last December. Just fantastic and fabulous. Herbie went back into school for fish and chips - it's Friday. Harriet and I had a coffee in The Ivy Barn. It was buzzing. They do the best cheese scones with loads of butter.
Tim saw in our new bnb guests with tea and chocolate brownies. Lindsey dropped by with Fritha and had an non alcohol g&t. I had one with alcoholic gin It is always lovely to see her and we can burble about our wonderful grandchildren. We are blessed.
The day ended with Tom cooking us an amazing and delicious guinea fowl/pasta/red wine dish. We had some glasses of wine before he headed back to Little Holt to work. Thank you Tom. So wonderful to be cooked for.

Thursday, 5th September 2024 - Clarke Gate
I had a changeover to do this morning. Damn I missed out on two outings. One was painting outside but that was rained off. Another was coffee with Pippa, Linda and June. I didn't have the morning free to join them. I expect they missed me.
Fable and his whistling frisbee, Tim. Tom and I went for a walk this afternoon. The torrential rain had reduced to a drizzle. The view through a tunnel of trees is the subject of today's postcard.
This evening we had pizza and drinks, I like the Kriek cherry beer, with Steve and Angie at a quiet McCanns. I found out lots of news about Benenden movements. I am off to bed to read my book.

Wednesday, 4th September 2024 - Rose from Tom
I weeded around the pond until the rain and a need for dinner set in. I am loving having Tom and Fable here. It would be perfect if we could have Harriet and her family living here too. I am sure we could fit another couple of houses into our garden. I am so proud of our grandchildren who have started the new school year bravely with a few tears from the little one and nerves from the girls. Squeezes my heart.
We are watching Sherwood. We have seen it before. It is even better the second time around. Very gritty. just found out there is another series. Excellent.
Today's postcard is a painting of a rose that Tom gave me. It is a tiny pot rose that I will transfer into the garden.... but..... as I saw two deer jumping around our flower beds today and knowing their penchant for roses it may be short lived.

Tuesday, 3rd September 2024 - Grandma's Chairs
I left my guests with their scrambled eggs and Tim to keep their coffee topped up. Tom, Fable and I went for a walk this morning. We didn't meet another person on the whole walk.
I have been thinking of my grandchildren going back to school today. Big changes for them all. I send them loads of hugs and love and look forward to hearing from them and how they are getting on.
It was a lovely surprise to see a very old friend Sarah-Jane this afternoon. She left a book for the grandchildren to read. We had tea in the garden and caught up on news and a bit of gossip. I read somewhere that socialising is one of the best ways to keep an active mind. Mine must be full of beans now.
When I was little I remember sitting in my Grandparents garden in chairs that had a canopy. I always loved them. Fourteen years ago when Harriet was expecting Hetty I bought some so we could sit and rest in the garden shaded from the sun. They have had new covers and are one of my favourite places to read my book.

Monday, 2nd September 2024 - Silver Birch for Love
Over tea, coffee, croissant and porridge we chatted about family and holidays with Dave and Josie who stayed last night. Tom and Fable joined us. I am looking forward to him staying with us.
I got the house and bnb room ready for guests who I wasn't sure would be turning up. Our last communication was in February. I made up a tea tray in preparation of their arrival and left it with Tim while I went to a WOKAS committee meeting in Tenterden. I had a great couple of hours discussing exhibition venues, get togethers and our open day. Our next meeting is a lunch in The Woolpack so we can check out their barn as an exhibition space.
Today's postcard is of the silver birch trees in Clive's garden. They are a symbol of love. The person I am sending it to has had some tragic times. I admire her positive attitude and energy.

Sunday, 1st September 2024 - Elizabeth's Grapes
It has been been a delightful day, a little hot and sticky in places. We held a family get together in the garden. So many came including the three 20ish year olds, some very active little ones and a couple of lively not so little ones, aunties, uncles, mothers, fathers, nieces, nephews, grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters. Alice had run a marathon that morning. The Evans had been climbing. Others had driven many many miles. I was very touched that we all got together. We ate and drank and chatted under umbrellas. I have found that I quite like table tennis.
Thank you to everyone who sent kind messages about our cat, Morris. She died this afternoon. It will be very odd not to have her around. Harriet worked out she was 22 years and 4 months old. And no, I don't want a kitten.

My bnb guest requested hot chocolate. I had to look up how to make it. A happy guest.
Tim and I have been gardening and cooking. The bread roll dough is rising. Bramley apples have been made into Eve's pudding. When we were in France we stopped in Duras and had a delicious dessert made with coconut. Tim hunted down the recipe. I made three ready for our family lunch tomorrow.
I think it maybe the last night for our 21 year old cat Morris. She is on her own Liverpool pathway.

Friday, 30th August 2024 - Friday Night Pint
I have shopping in the cupboards, fridge and freezer ready for a day of cooking tomorrow for a family lunch we are hosting on Sunday. I love a family get together.
I dropped into Silcocks for a coffee with Pippa who was holding a sale of her beautiful french treasures. I was very tempted by the blue and white chocolate pots that have eccentric handles.
Tim spent the day pruning and gardening. I spent the afternoon ironing and cleaning.We had well deserved beer - I like the cherry one - with Mike and Pippa at McCanns that seems to be settling into it setting.

I had a satisfying day of domestic tasks. It felt good to get on top of cleaning and ironing.
I have had a lovely evening with just a select few WOKAS members painting still life. Clive provided us with vases, pots, flowers, apples and bowls. I chose apples and a bowl.

Wednesday, 28th August 2024 - Ancient Shrub Rose
I hung a washing line full of blankets that flapped and dried in the sun. I felt very satisfied.
We had a power cut this afternoon. We were rung to check we were ok as they had notice that there was a pensioner in the house!!!
Lindsey came and helped me extract weeds from flower beds and relocate many many large slugs into the woods. Thank you for your help and company.
When we moved into our home 24 years ago there was an apricot shrub rose. Today it is still flowering and smells like sherbert. A good subject for a postcard.

It has been horribly quiet without our grandchildren. I occupied myself clearing, cleaning and tidying.
A circular walk around Rolvenden Layne with Tony and Wendy was very therapeutic. I found a house for sale that I liked. Even better that we finished in The Ewe and Lamb for an early drink.-

Monday. 26th August 2024 - Ready to go Home
We have had another night of the grandchildren without parents staying. They slept like angels all night. I was expecting a night time disturbance but none. Well done little ones. They are very individual and make an excellent mix. I have laughed, cried, shouted and had the best of times with them. They are now returned safely and unbroken to their parents.

Sunday, 25th August 2024 - After the Park
We had croissant or toast or rice for breakfast with Hetty, Raffy and Herbie. They all read books before heading into the day. I have played Brio and Playmobil with Herbie. I found a bag of stick on facial hair. Raffy sported a moustache for most of the day. The weather was warm enough to have a pasta lunch outside. Some magic pens occupied them all at various times of the day including myself. The garden provided entertainment from digging holes to reconfiguring our hose system. Tim took the children blackberry picking. I joined them with water and snacks at the park. The girls dressed up in a some of my clothes causing much giggling. Herbie found more toys to play with in the bath before reading me a bedtime story, then I got to read one to him. They certainly kept their grandparents entertained today.
Today's postcard is a quick sketch of our grandchildren and Tim watching a film after a busy day while I cooked dinner. They are all now in bed, including Tim.

Saturday, 24th August 2024 - Hibiscus for Wisdom
This morning I made Delia's leek and potato soup, cheese scones, a loaf of bread and brownies in preparation for the arrival of our grandchildren who are growing and need frequent feeding.
It was a shame that the weather was wet. Herbie and Tim took refuge in the garage repairing the holes in the paddling pool. We are in anticipation of a sunny day tomorrow. Hetty taught me how to play Dobble. I taught Hetty how to play dominos. Raffy and Herbie came and went during the games. They enjoyed a film with a dozing grandad. After homemade pizzas the girls read their books and Herbie sploshed around in the bath. It is now 9.45pm and I can hear the patter of feet above me. Hopefully exhaustion will overcome them very soon.

Friday, 23rd August 2024 - Castelmoron-sur-Lot
We have family staying and visiting over the next week or so. Tim and I donned our leather gloves and armed with secateurs battled a years worth of bramble growth to retrieve the garden table and chairs.
Today's postcard is painting of our last day in France. We were walking around the village of Castelmoron. A delightful town with cafe, boulangerie, pretty stone shuttered houses and river. I took many photos so that when I have finished with this year's project I can make BIG paintings.

Thursday, 22nd August 2024 - Summer Party
I was back in socks and jeans today. No hot Nouvelle-Aquitaine weather here in Benenden.
My sister welcomed me home with tea at her house. It was lovely to see her and Fritha. We caught up on stories in the kitchen while the rain watered the garden.
This evening it was our annual Weald of Kent Art Society Summer party. Clive held it in his studio which is like an solo art exhibition. So many beautiful paintings and sculptures. Damn the drizzle keeping us inside. We had a fun evening none the less.

Wednesday, 21st August 2024 - The Blue Bridge in Bordeaux
What a fantastic few days we have had in France. The house Mike and Pippa have in Fongrave is stunning. We hope to get invited back. I sat in the sun having my last breakfast of coffee and melon feeling sad that we were leaving.
Our packed bags were loaded into the car. We had coffee in Castle Moron with a delightful nutty biscuit. The market had a stall selling fish based meal. Shame we were full of croissant. Next time. Mike and Pippa took us to the train station in Tonneins where we had a wander and a lemonade. Our goodbyes said - it was sad to leave them - we boarded our train to Bordeaux. On arriving the tram took us into the centre where we were blinged by the shops. After I are my Poke bowl in a cafe we found an art gallery. A mixed exhibition with some theatrical religious paintings, some modern art and a bit of Impressionism. Back on the sunny streets of Bordeaux we wandered through a park before taking many trams to the airport which is where I am sitting blogging while we await our flight. I cannot wait to catch up with family. I missed them very very much.
I drew today's postcard while we were sitting in a park in Bordeaux and painted it while on the plane flying home. An interesting experience.

Monday, 19th August 2024 -Fig Tree and Caravan
The eight o clock bells roused me from my sleep. After a mug of tea and shower it was bed stripping and bag packing. Mike came and collected us and our bags for our next stay at their house. I love it here. There is so much space I can live and breath the trees. We sat out I. The warming sun with coffee and croissant. Caroline,Craig, Dee, Roger and Bill dropped by and had coffee on their way back home. June and Barry arrived with pastries as they were passing on their way back to Kent.
This afternoon we walked to the farm shop and ate our peaches and greengages on our walk back.
I bravely took a swim with Mike and Pippa in their pool.
This evening we had aperitifs with Pippa’s sisters and John watching the swans on the river.
Our day had not ended. We were taken to a night market. Tim and I had salt chicken d with rice and pickled vegetables followed by crepe while listening to live music.
The people next to me were leaving and gave us their raffle tickets. Politely I asked where they were from. Michael lived a couple of doors down from where I grew up in Keston!!! His sister Hilary Carver went to primary school with Tim and my sister. How freaky is that!
I am now heading to bed in the most stunning bedroom with huge windows opening onto wonderful star lit skies. Goodnight lovely people.

Sunday, 18th August 2024 -Behind La Maison Rose
We said goodbye to Steve and Zoe. It has been wonderful to catch up with their news. I would recommend them as house buddies anytime.
The weather was looking cooler. Tim and I decided on a walk to Castle Moron. About an hours walk but passing intriguing fields of corn, a nuttery of hazelnuts, plum trees and fields of sunflowers it took us a bit longer. We stopped for a romantic drink at Cafe do Commerce. We were joined by Ray and Linda and became a foursome. They drove off. We walked back to Fongrave. It was getting a bit hot. Back at our apartment I did a fine impression of a goldfish swimming in a bowl around and around in the pool.
Mike, Pippa, Ray, Linda, June and Barry arrived for an aperitif before we were escorted to my first Night Market in Montclar. I think that is where we were? Delightful food and a wonderful view with the most amazing orange moon.
Thank you Ray and Linda for driving us home. I think we are all shattered after a fabulous few days and all down to Mike and Pippa having the energy and insight to have a house here in Fongrave. Thank you and good night.

Saturday, 17th August 2024 - Saturday Market
Steve and Zoe drove us to Casseneuil. Beautiful town but it was deserted. AND no charging points for their car. We had a wander and a very salubrious coffee at canoe hire place. Looking for something a bit more vibrant Steve drove us to Villeneuve sur lot which was much more buzzy. We strolled through the market and found a lunch spot with a fixed price three course menu with wine and coffee. The market was dismantled by the time we had eaten our peaches and cream. Charging points came available so Steve charged off to plug in. We tourist around churches and bridges and returned to a charged car as the rain bucked down. A supermarket gave us refuge and provided us with party wine and sea urchin nibbles.
I am drinking a last glass of wine with Steve and Zoe at 1.30am ish, Tim has gone to bed, before they leave us tomorrow. Now Steve has gone to bed. We have spent a fabulous evening at Mike and Pippa’s French house warming party with their friends, neighbours and family. Now Zoe has gone to bed!!! I am all alone.
