Black-lists, prisons, and other institutions that rely on diseased discursive formations, have been around for centuries. I hope whatever solution gets implemented applies the principles of transformative justice. Punishment is an abuse of power that receives legitimacy through cognitive biases, most of which are unconscious. It is human to be empathetic to the ostensibly vulnerable one; however, it takes more courage to see the desperation of the troll. While the victim should not bare the brunt of dealing with the verbal assault, the real strength of the community is demonstrated when they can hold the perpetrator accountable without punitive measures. Often times it is the minority who gets punished for so called "acting out". TJ tries to explore the deeper reason for the maladaptive behavior and develop interventions that sustain cohesion while reducing harm. Choice-set nudges, like the Mastodon experiments, facilitate discrimination against social deviants (i.e. those who deviate from the statistical norm enough to elicit repulsion), in the name of safety. Security requires real interaction. Relationship building is critical. Social platforms that rely on automated or punitive measures will fail, because those strategies are asocial.
