@b2aba05b I was really hoping that Mastodon would become the new central hub. It's frustrating to see parts of my old community scattering to BlueSky or Threads, even though the best conversations are happening here.
One interesting detail I couldn't fit into the story:
NASA's Galileo probe visited Europa up close, but wasn't able to see the carbon dioxide deposits on the surface. Every time Galileo got close to Europa, Jupiter's intense radiation blinded its sensors.
Scientists had to step back 500 million miles to get a clear view!

@a5f14892 It's really sad. I see 1/10th, or even 1/100th, the level of response I used to get.
Some of it is surely because I refuse to pay for a blue tick. But even big institutional science & journalism accounts seem to be talking into the void over there.
The difference in engagement here vs the ex-bird site is staggering.
I did an experiment. My last post was shared 12 times over there (where I allegedly have 85k followers). A nearly identical post was shared 361 times here (where I have fewer than 6k followers). Amazing.

Shocking story about mRNA pioneer/Nobel winner Katalin Karikó, whose early advisor at Temple tried to have her deported & derailed her career because she dared to look for a better-paying job.
Later, UPenn demoted her, then forced her out, because her research wasn't bringing in enough funding. #NobelPrize #science [HT Paul Novosad]

@d4d08813 Has SpaceX articulated any concepts for life support, radiation shielding, etc, on a crewed, Mars-bound version of Starship? All I've seen are tweets (er...x's) and videos promising that it will all work just fine.
