"I don't say this lightly - but the floods in
#PortoAlegre, #Brazil, are looking comparable to what Katrina did to New Orleans in 2005 -- massive evacuations, water & power outages, key infrastructure damaged, parts of city, possible long-term consequences."—Brian Winter

Background heating +1.3ºC

I can’t emphasis how remarkable this is.

About 67% of South Africa’s landmass is experiencing extreme heat at the moment. We have 157 reporting weather stations and by Thursday afternoon at 1pm 104 of them had reported temperatures above 30°C!

 Current status:

+1.3ºC above preindustrial (As of Sept '23)
419.51 ppm C02 (June `23)
1922.26 ppb CH4 (May '23)
1.36 W/m^2 Earth Energy Imbalance (Jan `20 - Jun `23)

Permanent +1.5ºC by about 2030 and, on our current emission trajectory, 2ºC by about 2050.

How bad must it get before we act?

Climate literacy is non-negotiable as we move deeper into the climate crisis.

“The popularity of black roof colours in Western Sydney is contributing to its “heat island” status”

(As an aside, if you read the comments on this piece WTF is going on in Australia?)

In our hemisphere we are moving into spring.

It would seem that we will be carrying on where the northern hemisphere left off 😳
