Meta is proposing a paid option to opt-out of advertising on Instagram and Facebook. It's basically extortion to have your right to #privacy protected.

Ads can and should be delivered without resorting to illegal #surveillance that violates users' rights and exposes them to predatory or discriminatory advertising.

If #Meta can't conduct their business legally, that should be their problem to solve not ours.

ORG's @51ec419a responds.

Suella Braverman's claim that the Human Rights Act (UK) is only good for criminals is an act of malign misdirection.

Politicians who attack human rights want to remove safeguards that protect us all from government and corporate abuses of power.

To give them free rein over our lives.

🚨 With the 'click of one button' the UK passport database becomes a criminal database 🚨

Plugging biometric data gathered for the purpose of passport control into an expanding system of facial recognition is a game-changer.

This brazen abuse of power will destroy privacy safeguards and the presumption of innocence, with everyone fair game in a vast, unfettered police surveillance network.

All without public consultation or scrutiny.

🚨 Facial recognition in public spaces and at our borders treats us all like suspects.

We deserve to enjoy our rights to assembly, expression, asylum and more without intrusive surveillance.

✊ We’ve joined 180 organisations and experts to say police, state authorities and companies MUST stop using facial recognition tech to surveil us.

In March, ORG and @18b81c1e defeated the UK government for a SECOND time over attempts to deny migrants access to their data.

Now the government is appealing the decision.

✊We need your support to continue fighting the UNLAWFUL immigration exception ⤵️

It might be possible to have live facial recognition on CCTV cameras, but do we want to live in a dystopian surveillance state? https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/sep/11/facial-recognition-could-transform-policing-in-way-dna-testing-did-says-met-chief #privacy #humanrights #digitalrights #surveillance
"The continued existence of the powers [in the Online Safety Bill] means encryption-breaking surveillance could still be introduced in the future"

If the government accepts that they can't scan messages without wrecking privacy and security, why not just remove the spy clause from the Bill?

Our issue with the #OnlineSafetyBill is that tech companies will have to use algorithms to decide whether content is illegal and remove it before it’s even been posted.

This isn’t about demonetisation, it’s about platforms being forced to block or take down more of your posts.

We’ll never know how many ordinary people have their content censored by the Bill once it is implemented.

Unlike #RussellBrand it’s very likely you won’t have a high profile to raise awareness.
