Have you tried wakesurfing?  I think the slower speed of wakesurfing is easier on your body. And, the goal is to drop the rope, so no gloves needed :-) 

 Your X post about soldering cables made me smile. I enjoyed time as a kid partially and then fully inserting audio cables like that and listening to the effect.
