Notes by Rep. Shontel Brown | export

The Constitution makes this the People’s House, but Republican dysfunction is preventing us from fulfilling our responsibility to govern.

I hope today’s somber events end this sad era so that we can advance an agenda that delivers results by putting people over politics.
While extreme MAGA Republicans fight with each other and play political games, Democrats saved us from a shameful shutdown and are putting People Over Politics to deliver for Ohioans and people across the country.
A Republican shutdown would jeopardize nutrition assistance for millions of Americans. 179,262 women and children in Ohio could lose WIC benefits, including 43,802 infants.

This is immoral.

As a Black woman, I see very clearly how book bans across the country are part of a larger effort to erase Black history.

I'm proud to cosponsor Rep. Jamie Raskin's Banned Books Resolution because book bans not only endanger our core values and freedoms, but the future of our country.

An extreme Republican shutdown will have real consequences for real people, including taking away nutrition assistance for women and young children in #OH11.

Working families in Northeast Ohio can’t afford a Republican shutdown. It’s time for House Republicans to stop the political games and grandstanding and work with Democrats to keep critical services up and running.
Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us that our culture, economy, and nation are made stronger by diversity.

This month is a special time to celebrate and recognize the countless contributions Hispanic Americans have made to the fabric of our country.
Happy Rosh Hashanah to all who celebrate! May your new year be filled with good health, happiness, and peace.

L’Shanah Tovah!
I support the UAW International Union’s right to fight for good wages and benefits, and to protect US jobs.
There is a coordinated right-wing effort to use the courts to take this country back in time to when people who look like me were not afforded the same rights as my Caucasian counterparts.

I will continue to use my platform on the House Oversight Committee to speak out against injustice.

Today I met with community leaders from across #OH11 to discuss local concerns and how my office can help.

A major topic was the need for gun safety reform.

House Democrats know that keeping #PeopleOverPolitics means passing gun safety legislation to protect our communities.
