oh i love these kind of absurdist, science fiction style things

the hilarity is the fact that post offices are outdated, and so are addresses

they should just be GPS coordinates

this would lead the courier to a point on teh road nearest me... ie, the entrance to my caminho about 40m up the hill. perfect.

address schemes are completely out of date. GPS for delivery locations. Hell, i'd just specify the coordinates of that point on that road up the hill, and specify to call me when they arrive and how long it takes me to climb up to it.
amazon doesn't allow a comment field in the addresses

so, i have put an address in for my order for 620nm red (old school) LED strips that run on 5v (so they come in packs of 2x2m long) because this place is all cool white fancy encapsulated shitty uggly glaringly blue (except for one that is kinda yellow) all through my new place

but it's confusing as fuck, because this caminho actually loops back to the same road further down

so, i just have to watch their order process, and when the damn thing gets a CTT delivery number, maybe i can log into CTT and put a note on it, something like "please call at delivery and wait 2min, or drop off at ponta delgada"

like, how long has amazon been doing business with spain and portugal, i'm pretty sure that these little footpath only roads exist all across both countrties, i mean, really?

it's pretty amazing how much friction governments create to business, and this is a shining example
yeah, call at delivery... and if no answer drop at ponta delgada... that would be the preferable

anyhow, i figure i gotta get adapted to this new scheme... technically i haven't actually changed my region in madeira, but it's about 12m away from where i was.

i was talking to the landlady's gopher of my previous place and he also was of the opinion that if i had no intention to stay more than 2 years that there was no point in faffing about with registrations

pretty funny

national governments and local governments have no idea how to deal with european foreigners

the fact is that they actually don't care, and most of the time you can just go from one EU place to another, schengen or not, and for the most part nobody is going to bat an eyelid if you don't go get your tax shit organised

they barely even care here in portugal, except if you directly deal with local businesses... the post (CTT) doesn't care... literally only the banks and the telcos care... vodafone was fine giving out a post paid account to me last year based on some shitty piece of paper from financas, and again they ask for this shitty piece of paper even though i have the number and they are not happy with only the number... but most other businesses are fine with just the number, if they ask at all. which most don't

taxation is voluntary

if you complain about it, it's because you didn't bother to learn that it's voluntary
haha... 12km... it's a pretty long walk tbh.. nice walk, but long walk
yeah, it's wild what the left turned into

meanwhile all the left went to the center i think... according to the modern political compass

seriously, if it's not clear:

1. communistic groupthink mentality took over universities starting in the 60s

2. pandering to the justifiably angry outcasts at the margins of society who had valid complaints instead of the factual basis that these prejudicial processes were unlawful, were politically offensive

3. focus in on enabling and coercing everyone to want to have no children so the ponzi scheme would not collapse
how is it that with all this AI tech you still can't actually narrow down tech items on amazon by what you actually want

2m, usb cable, USB-a male to usb-a female... nope... i even swear i ordered one and can't see it in the damn orders list

like, am i supposed to be impressed by the tech of amazon?

really. this is 🤣

and microsoft unnecessarily created a file metadata bit flag for it instead of following a model that already existed when they bought qdos and rebranded it ms-dos... mainly because 8.3 rigid filename schema, which on unix was - i think - 32 bytes at the time (it's now 256 and i think NTFS has a 256 byte total path limit, microsoft is always dragging their knuckles)
also, the fact that it coincides with the code for pwd is awesome

the #golang idea of making ... mean "recursive" is genius IMO, and i generally can't say enough for the unix wisdom of sir Robert Pike
 Another important point.

i think there should be two options:

1. show old version and links at the bottom of it to reveal updated versions
2. show newest version and links at the bottom of it to reveal outdated versions

let user choose which default, and when the link is clicked, they can see all versions
 oh yes and i forgot

each version has its own reply tree. keep them separated

exhibit a:

https://www.greenchoices.org/news/blog-posts/the-jevons-paradox-when-efficiency-leads-to-increased-consumption

the reason why human population has increased is the consequence of available energy

however, the bullshit Science™️ tries to pretend it's the other way around.

this paper concludes that there is no correlation between energy consumption and population in the way that the mainstream narrative tries to paint it:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/380443747_The_Relationship_Between_Energy_Consumption_Population_and_Economic_Growth_in_Developing_Countries

however it doesn't examine the contrary model which is that the population rises when there is more population

this is more obvious in temperate and cold climates where literally heat is required to survive winter, but it also applies in the warm subtropical and tropical zones, because heat is also counter productive to a lot of aspects of economic production, notably, the problems of temperature and increasing water dependency, and the fact that humans just want to lie down under an electric fan when it's hot, and that is a net loss of production

removing people won't change anything, the CO2 levels being lowered won't make the temperature warmer

it's just a sick, megalomaniacal fantasy of people with too much money and power who literally shove their lust for murder right in your face and most people buy the superficial text and ignore the obvious subtext of gleeful murder

it will get the tag "comedy" i'm sure
lfg, better than hippies turning into skeletons trying to lower their carbon footprunt
it could at least be a mockumentary
i would love to see it happen but i'm concerned that there isn't actually an audience for it who will fund it in the end of the process
now that i have found a way to silence the wifi on my connection, here is some clear demonstration of the benefits of not using wireless connections

my connection naked, via my ISP based in funchal:

https://cdn.satellite.earth/bc0f2d3ba01c932b71df3df58119333b08257c81004035c4f9193b4b235fe34d.png

and over my VPN, amusingly enough, connected automatically via morocco (which is one of the places cables go to from here, it's only 500km):

https://cdn.satellite.earth/92d16ce2f972102262c0b3e2dcfb1472509d5b53109dc57cc3947434900d5c29.png

pleased to see that my kinda expensive VPS service does indeed do gigabit speeds and as such carries most of the capacity of my line through my VPS that i have here

seriously mad though, i mean, 500mbit download speed... who is even going to use that? that's more than you need for 4k video streaming...

it's no wonder i have no problems hosting my relay for testing on these connections... the one at my previous place though, it did not have this much speed download, i think it was around 200Mbit

so i pay 50 euro less per month, get almost perfect nature silence most of the time except when the dogs are barking at the cats around sunset, and occasionally cars drive past, and there is sometimes tourists wandering past on their way to the arco de sao jorge hiking trail, and i think some stray dogs do a patrol past here... and my internet is more than 2x faster

ok i've doubled my housing cost for 5 weeks but this is so much better

the sound of the creek down in the gully and the ebb and flow of the sound of the ocean smacking against the rocks is so soothing
and the increase there is more than the hardware they made there with that energy that got shipped here will ever compensate for... if you even actually believed this carbon dioxide bullshit at all, making stuff more efficient is the only path to better, and this is also obstructed by a law of economics that says increased efficiency leads to net increase of consumption

the simple fact is, the only way to reduce carbon dioxide emission is to kill people
btw the law i refer to is Jevon's Paradox - that as efficiency (mainly cost) increases, the net consumption also increases
and, i can even close it almost fully closed without kinking the wires up too much and no more visibility of it... here's proof

https://cdn.satellite.earth/cd512722d3b285e1e360a9d3b0499e5e399428905e2ac9d3c2370e6489e469a8.png

you can also see that it is normally only connected via ethernet (the <--> symbol next to the battery charge indicator), and it has NFC enabled but that's it

also i wanted to show this because if you use amethyst you can see my status message and one of my neighbours has this as their SSID on their wifi, probably the neighbour up the hill with the two cats
for anyone else who is in a situation where there is wifi they can't stop, and a microwave is available, they make perfect faraday cages to block the router from sending out the SSID even as close as 4 meters
nostr:nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzqnyqqft6tz9g9pyaqjvp0s4a4tvcfvj6gkke7mddvmj86w68uwe0qyghwumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnvv9hxgtcpzamhxue69uhk6mr9dd6jumn0wd68yvfwvdhk6tcqyrl59qstkezq3dwd28c2k73uua4hveul3nkxzpf58xskghudcl93c4daew6
today i learned that a new trend in internet service is to provide you with routers that you can't turn off the wifi

the Altice GR241AG optic fibre IPTV/VoIP router has a "smart wifi" feature enabled which works with mesh wifi network systems and you have to call the damn provider to actually turn it off

i even popped open this box and disconnected what looked like typical wifi antenna sockets and the damn wifi is still detected at nearly half strength by my phone

probably will have to do some research but i am pretty sure i should be able to get some typical standard optical ethernet router that doesn't have wifi in it at all...

on the bright side, nothing is connected to it... but on teh other side, it's sending out a beacon 10 times a second or something to advertise its existence

part of the reason why this is really dumb is that some people have their own infrastructure requirements, and these baked in settings mean that you can literally get a degradation of the function of your own hardware because of the interference on the channel

even before you put into the formula that someone might actually NOT WANT ANY MICROWAVE RADIO aside from the unavoidable GSM in a dumbphone

hell, i'd love to even ditch that and just have a voip line and when i'm out, tough shit, call back later, leave a message jackass
best solution makes use of the microwave oven i don't want to use - put it inside it, unplugged of course. the interior of the microwave is designed to contain this kind of radiation, though probably not 5ghz so well
and, i can even close it almost fully closed without kinking the wires up too much and no more visibility of it... here's proof

https://cdn.satellite.earth/cd512722d3b285e1e360a9d3b0499e5e399428905e2ac9d3c2370e6489e469a8.png

yeah, it's just fucking rude and shitty

and they aren't the only ISP locking this on with this device, most of the info i found about people trying to disable it and sometimes effective were on an ISP called Optimum, and MEO portugal is the one doing it here

so glad i was able to find a workaround though... probably can rig something more reasonable as a faraday cage that still lets the thing breathe (the microwave will allow the heat to dissipate also) but EVEN WITH THE ANTENNAS UNPLUGGED it was able to see and connect to it... mind blowing... the signal is so strongly sent through the wires that it transmits even without a proper configuration of antenna
yeah, i will investigate whether i can get my own non-wireless, ethernet only optical router

putting it inside the microwave and closing the door is effective... the wires are not being squashed that badly because of the way microwave doors at the bottom meet at a right angle of the base so there's no overlap or other ding pushing at them, it's working, no hotspot detected, that will do for now, not gonna use either the wifi or the microwave (for similar reasons)

the only thing to worry about is i need to put those antennas back on right, i didn't photograph them before unplugging them... i suppose their range will be simply not so good, as it's a 4 antenna MIMO array
but yes, if i had some alligator clips and wires attached to an earth pin on the power system it would kill the radios... i don't see how it could lead to current going into it unless my place got struck by lightning or something, current goes where the strongest positive potential exists, which is earth... it's also a hassle, the case comes apart with clips easy enough, but to put earth through to silence all those antennas would mean leaving the case open

this way now is safer, just put em inside a faraday cage, gone
walking around gives a lot of time to think, especially when one doesn't bring a smart phone with one

and as i was on my big walk this morning back to sao vicente to retrieve the last few essentials for me to be able to do my thing here (some toiletries, some frozen foods, coffee machine and pods) i had a thought

mobile phones originally were a great thing... now you can make and receive calls from anywhere

but then they turned them into a Viewscreen in your Pocket, 1984 style, and did all this shit to get people addicted to carrying them around and staring at them every spare moment they weren't busy, and even often when they were, leading to more than a few accidents

i think there will be a move back to the idea of a phone just being a way to make and send short messages and do voice calls... i sure feel a lot better knowing the little phone in my pocket can barely do anything except tell the telco where the sim is, approximately, phone is too small and dumb to be able to do any more surveillance or manipulation than this. perfect.
bah... fuckin postman knows me well and drives past and honks his horn and turns out he was about to show up at my place and he sees me going down the hill all ladened on my bike and ... grrr assholes

anyhow, wasn't difficult to request them forward it to the nearby post office service point at a petrol station in ponta delgada, which is like 20 minutes walk from my place, which i can get to via a path that has no tunnel or car traffic because the road is a coast road that is closed and a little too decayed to drive cars on anymore.

yay, getting my new bank terminal/navigator smart phone that will become very dumb and mostly disconnected... monday i guess
i'm definitely not going on any big walks until monady anyway... my knee just went "whinge" just now

got all my stuff sorted now... 5kg of beef patties in the freezer, 3kg of dripping in the fridge, and the shop up the road actually has decent looking steaks so i can eat steaks too

it is a bit of a climb but i'll be fine lol
i got up this morning and turned on my pc and tinkering with the usb ethernet i've got hooked up to my now only-ethernet phone/bank terminal because it didn't seem to want to come back online when the pc was back

then i discovered that the case of my pc was live

and i traced all the power cables and discovered that the power out to all of my computerd and attached hardware had no earth pole on it

🤦‍♂️

i mean, it was very live, felt like 12V 1A pulsed current, really disturbing

so i removed this non-earthed cable and voila

but it also made me have a question, "is this current always going to ground like this?"

makes me wonder if there isn't a fault in the computer power supply... i wish i had a multimeter so i could figure out where the earth leak was cos it's super dodgy having an earth leak on a grounded circuit
sheesh, the liberal tears are infesting my feed... must block, and possibly unfollow the sillies who are engaging with this cringefest

i have officially pulled my main voice/sms/shitty internet sim out of my main phone now, and it only has an ethernet connection

the sim has gone into my tiny thumb-sized dumbphone, which will be what i carry with me when i go out

the other phone is now my house bank terminal and i have a better, more robust device coming, which will do this work, i seem to recall i ran xapo bank app on a rooted phone before ok, but revolut was unhappy, and the device will be able to limit charge to 80% so it doesn't blow up the battery when almost always on charge, and when it comes with me for navigation duties, i'll do what i can about the root control of radios and disable all of them, including the "emergency" one... GPS receiving only.

got my earthing mat sorted out and plugged in, and did something i was meaning to do for a while, moved all the cables out from underneath my desk so it was ok to put the carbon lamp heater behind my desk where it will keep my legs warm... the floor here is cold, and even, just before, i closed up the house, and the floor started getting noticably damp all over the place

one of the great things about the carbon lamp is it heats the materials not the air, so the light it shines on the floor will actually penetrate into the floor and the concrete slab and warm it all up, and that will hold heat for a long time, meaning that i will probably be able to not have the heater on sometimes at all even though it's cold because the slab around the desk has warmed up... oh yes, and my earthing mat is black and likely fairly thermoconductive as it is also electroconductive, and improve the absorption of the heat into the floor... last step is to disable the wireless radio on the modem and all i will have of radio in here is a teensy little GSM radio in that little phone, and that's it, and it can go on the kitchen bench instead of on my desk
oh, there is the steam controller radio too but that only activates when i turn on the thing... so i only get my balls nuked while i'm gaming haha, apropos lol
hm idk if the earthing makes as much difference out here in the sticks, especially when i turn off all the radios and such... no nasty chemical factories nearby, just the occasional dust storm from the sahara blowing over, but i've got a heap of metabolic problems from sugar metabolism due to celiac and t2 diabetes or at least some kidney damage from artificial sweeteners... but it's probably helping me stay neutral so i'd guess it's helping but not maybe as much as when i actually get my diet right

and yeah, IR is the best... fun fact, these lamps were the first commercial form of electric lighting, they are a dim orange light, and emit a lot of heat... they seem to last pretty good too, carbon is one of the highest melting materials, even more resistant to heat than tungsten... i think of these vacuum tubes with carbon as being like the golden edges of burning charcoal without the burning part, just the warm

i get that sometimes too but, and not to alarm you, i also had a developing problem with my kidneys and spleen... energy drinks and seed oil fried potato chips were probably the main contributors, and backing up the rear was beer

i haven't had this as much recently since i stated taking extra potassium, magnesium, cutting out/down on the energy drinks, drinking more water

the thing that was most memorable for me was having a thought and then literally in the moment between having teh thought and going to do something on my pc, i'd be struggling to recall what i just thought, forgetting many things that i used to be good at remembering

i'm pretty sure that the number one issue with all of this is chronic high blood sugar, and dehydration, there are many contributors to this, some i have listed, others you may never have heard of

like, not consuming enough potassium containing foods... this means, not meat, but stuff like bananas and potatoes

magnesium is an especially hard one, and doubly if your digestive system is in a bad way and like me, i have celiac, so if i put seed proteins into my gut, everything goes faster, and the result is not enough magnesium, as it's the slowest to absorb

i also was reminded about vitamin A too, this is an important one, and the absolute best sources are liver, and carrots, in that order... the best liver is goat liver, as i recently discovered, really mild flavor for liver

but above all of it, i just will say i'm pretty sure it's from excessive blood sugar, which causes the formation of amylose starches in your blood, and these little fragments of waxy glucose plastic interfere with the movement of neurotransmitters and the flow of electrons through other tissue like muscles, and in general probably interferes with the normal function of stuff that goes on between your neurons, the astrocytes especially, they are little starfish that run around joining synapses together

There is a lot of other things like this. Depression, for example, is a kind of psychosis where the future is only dark. This is also a false form of wisdom.
i'm kinda chuffed that i figured that one out before i read that plato already figured it out though... first principles are so important
 Ever have visual migraines?🤔
Yeah, sometimes really bad. Usually from bad alcohol combined with energy drinks and dehydration.

I recently started to get double vision also. It's a bit similar but I think from peripheral neuropathy, caused by kidney damage fro artificial sweeteners and T2 diabetes.

For sure dehydration is a key part of visual migraines tho
Lots of water, cut out diuretics, supplement magnesium and potassium, and zinc and copper (important to keep those in balance)
I have heard the word "spend" used the same way in recent years. I figured it's just some kind of...
Er, I meant focus on verbs. Bulgarian has a elaborate, extended set of verb tenses, a notable one being reported speech.

And in modern colloquial speech they use the word vika/vikam (they/he said, I said) which is actually present tense like I say, he say, like the ,"I say I say I say" expression.

The word actually means to call out also, kaza or kazvam means to say.
This is an honest question and I have a feeling someone will give me a solid answer.

When did ...
Haha, that is the opposite mutation though. Noun turned to verb.
I also have ancestors from there among others. The cult of Saturn has only eclipsed the world in recent decades.

Just like an eclipse it will end and the light will creep back, though it will feel like all at once as a dawn.
It would be unhealthy to think of all new tech as "competition" to Nostr.

Nostr is not Bitcoin, ...
it's incredible to me, and the response i got from these guys over my educated skepticism was borderline malicious trolling

they just don't get it that they are trying to get people to migrate from the best protocol in existence instead of extending it

microsoft proved the efficacy of this method of overwhelming an open protocol to take control of it, they called it "embrace, extend and extinguish"

when you have a dogged userbase for something and you want to eliminate this competition, you don't make a new thing that does much the same and hope that people will jump across

you use the thing people want to use, you make it better, and then you make it hard for the existing dev community to maintain their userbase thereafter.

that's why i just don't get how they don't seem to understand that their best option, as a small dev shop, to do something for actual user privacy and improving nostr's penetration into social media, would be to extend the protocol, even still

relays are the general method of transmitting, it's basically a web of POP servers, from an architecture perspective... adding some amount of fast converging consistency to the data that needs to be made consistent would be a good thing

i have this disagreement with shitcoin smart contract projects as well, they simply don't get it that you do eventual consistency on such highly heteregenous network topologies as social networks... data only needs to get to where it's asked for, it doesn't have to go everywhere and it doesn't have to be there all at once, best effort is ok

there's so much potential for making this happen in a big way but no, we have to make our own mostly replica of nostr protocol architecture and add our bit and then "promote" it by going to nostr and expecting a warm reception from the obviously skeptical, and technically advanced userbase of nostr
transformers would be a more well known example i think of gen-x preteen cartoons... and maybe He-Man and the spinoff She-Ra... and Cabbage Patch Kids and Rainbow Brite and Strawberry Shortcake... and we had the first cartoon version of the Lord of the Rings... oh yes, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Star Wars
