I've come to realise eink is mostly a meme, it's really cool tech and probably has some use cases but upon realising I comfortably read social media on my laptop for hours I've realised I could just do the same with books, download an epub and drag+drop to apple books (syncs progress and book with phone) then just read on whatever device I'm using, tools even exist to import highlights from books into obsidian or whatever else - most portable eink devices are laggy and janky as far as battery life goes I can't remember the last time my phone or laptop ran out of charge and if it did I wouldn't be too concerned with reading books and apple books doesn't seem to drain my iphones battery to a point of being a concern
Finished reading: Doing Good Better by William MacAskill 📚
Interesting but uncomfortable book, if you ignore local issues and focus on objectively more important ones you’ll do more but be stuck feeling like you’re doing less compared to action that you instantly see the results of

as someone in the Uk the recent freedom of speech issues are concerning, some people got arrested for inciting violence and direct calls to violence which is banned in most countries anyway but some got arrested for talking about their beliefs about groups of people (I'm not defending what was said) but their right to say it is important, I don't care about freedom of speech I care about whats downstream from it which is freedom of thought, if we tomorrow we banned a word like "tree" or "walk" or anything really eventually people will think in different ways because how you talk influences how you think, the words you use and the type of thoughts you have, when you restrict someones freedom of speech (if it's enforced in mass) you are restricting their thoughts in a very real way
Now running my own bitcoin node (+lightning) 92% synced on a 2011 i5 mac mini I bought off ebay for £70 - umbrel made the actual setup insanely simple as well
I've become even firmer that an easy way to orangepill is getting someone to install a easy wallet then making small bets (100-5k sats) with friends, it's reached the point where when at the pub etc when theres a chance for a bet someone will just say an amount and odds, then usually someone will ask what 200sats 2:1 means - easy social contagion because what person doesn't like winning money and joining in with games
Exactly, you might like or retweet stuff that makes you unhappy (because it might be important) but it seems very unlikely you'll zap it, exchange of currency only seems to happen on posts that make you feel good, no other social media platform has a metric for "positive value" brought by a post, just metrics that measure "want others to see this" and "agreement"
exo ( https://github.com/exo-explore/exo ) allows you to cluster your devices to run AI, it's only a matter of time before people start sharing compute, you setup a VPN server running exo, then each device you want to contribute to the cluster you route to that VPN - a group of 5 friends doing this would essentially provide a decent level of compute for running AI at literally no cost (excluding the vpn server which could just be a dirt cheap one)
semi related I saw this post yesterday and found out backing up nostr is a thing, then last night by pure chance my profile/following got nuked but I backed up yesterday on a whim so was able to recover
Does anyone have a strategy for organising and compartmentalising your notes on nostr? Right now all I can think of is having one master account then sub accounts for each thing
For the longest time I was incredibly pessimistic then a friend convinced me optimism vs pessimism is more of a habit than a trait - I didn't believe them at first but as the years have gone on and I've become a much more optimistic person I wish someone would have told me sooner
Marginalised people being left out of financial systems is a huge issue, most homeless people I've spoken to has expressed a lack of being able to bank as a contributing factor, can't get a house without a bank, can't save money without a bank, can't get a job without a bank, if you only hold cash you're a target for robbery and robbery can deplete you to a much larger degree, a homeless person could memorise the words or store off person, have a QR code on a sign which would even allow use of things like block explorers to "know" they're not a fake homeless person (fairly common in the UK and is a cited reason why a lot don't give ot homeless people) not only that but post covid a much larger amount of people are cashless leading to homeless people getting given a lot less money
I think you're right that for normies it'll be tough to get them to understand but I onboarded a normie to bitcoin last night, got him to download a wallet and show me the qr code then sent him some sats, instantly received, entire process took probably under a minute - it was quicker for him to download a bitcoin wallet (muun) then make a wallet and show me the qr code than it would have been for him to find and send me his bank account number and sort code - normies need a usage for it and right now it's usage as a currency is fringe, since me and a few other friends like placing bets on random things going to try and get them to swap over to bitcoin for it, bet in sats instead of gbp
it feels like nostr has a much lower rate of posts compared to other social media, at first it annoyed me but it's kind of growing on me, makes you less compulsive about checking it cause I know as long as I check it every 1/2 days I'll still see most of the content I want
from now on when things go wrong in my life instead of blaming the rothschilds im going to indiscriminately blame crowdstrike, phone b attery died? crowdstrike. girl rejected me? crowdstrike
I've decided to try moving from conventional social media (twitter) to new social media (nostr) I first got into crypto 10+ years ago and it seemed vital to have actually control over digital currency then as we all saw the huge spike of BTC lead to most people treating it like a speculative stock instead of a currency at that point I stopped spending it and a few years after kind of wrote off crypto as a whole since everyone I spoke to only seemed to care about ROI etc, on twitter that's still the norm (pump and dumping memecoins etc) I think the idea of zaps is incredible, a universal way to reward good content. Ramble over.
