Why does #DarkMatter change the observed shape of #galaxies? 🌀 And by how much? What is #WeakGravitationalLensing and how does #ESAEuclid 🛰️ use this technique to map 📷 the matter distribution across the Universe?
We have a new @cbd9aa75 blog post with a brief intro into this:

Why are there #astronomy #telescopes 🔭 in #space? There's so much easier access when building an #observatory on a mountain, so why is #ESAEuclid in space 🛰️ , 1.5 million kilometers from here?
Read up on why some science requires a telescope outside Earth's atmosphere 🌏 and compare ground-based images with the first images of #Euclid. Our new blog post: “Why is going to space crucial to map dark matter?”

We already pointed to issues for #ESAEuclid requiring extra time for commissioning. 👩🏼🏭 The #Euclid #spacecraft saw unexpected straylight 💡 and X-ray photons 🩻 from a hyperactive sun, and the fine guiding sensor 🔬 software was not yet to specifications.
It's starting to look better: Avoiding some sun-angles gets rid of straylight, while industry, ESA, and @cbd9aa75 scientists 👩🏿💻 are working on software updates and diagnostics.

That is *exactly* what we are saying 😉
Main goal was basically to make sure that people who looked at the initial timeline and now see these updates by ESA to not be worried.
One subsystem needs extended commissioning efforts, it's all on software level and not due to broken hardware or similar.
So what we want to say: neither the spacecraft nor the mission are in any danger, but industry needs a bit more time until our survey can start. 🙂
