Camasnacroise, part of the extremely remote settlement of Kingairloch in Morvern. Kingairloch is reached only by single track roads and largely stands on the north shore of Loch a' Choire, an offshoot of the west side of Loch Linnhe. 105 years ago today. The troopship HMS Otranto sank off Islay with the loss of 431 lives on 6 October 1918. Her loss, and that of S.S. Tuscania on 5 February 1918 with 260 deaths, is marked by the poignant American Monument on Islay. The view along one of Scotland's loneliest "A" roads. The A846 runs up part of the east side of the wonderful island of Jura, the wildest and emptiest of all of Scotland's inhabited islands. The Broch of Gurness, the wonderfully evocative remains of an Iron Age broch and village overlooking Eynhallow Sound on Orkney's West Mainland. It was built as a planned settlement some time before 200BC. The site was excavated in 1929. A distant view of mighty Duart Castle, standing guard over the entrance to the Sound of Mull from its location at the eastern tip of the Isle of Mull. A stone defensive structure was probably first built here in the mid-1200s. The west beach on Vatersay, which has been the most southerly inhabited island in the Western Isles since 1912, when Mingulay was abandoned. Since 1991 Vatersay has been connected by a causeway to the neighbouring island of Barra. With origins that date back to the mid-1100s and looking like a French château transplanted into Falkirk, the stunning Callendar House was built close to the line of the Roman Antonine Wall and is now an impressive museum. The amazing - and amazingly small - harbour at Seacliff in East Lothian. This was created in 1890 using a steam engine and compressed air to carve the harbour out of solid rock. Kellie Castle near Pittenweem in Fife, whose layout is a very unusual T shape. There may have been a castle at Kellie from as early as the mid 1100s, but the oldest part visible today, the north-west tower, probably dates back to 1360. The ruins of Red Castle, enjoying a magnificent location overlooking Lunan Bay, south of Montrose in Angus.
