Notes by Steve Henderson Fine Art | export

Only a few people were up and about that morning as I took a leisurely beach walk.

We were all doing pretty much the same thing: enjoying the salty sea air, listening to the soft sound of the distant tide, stopping to gaze at the waves and just breathe it all in.

I would start all my mornings like this, if I could, but the memory is enough to give my inland mornings a quiet boost.

May the image take you to that wonderful, magical world of music, dance, and romance where time slows down to just the right pace.

"You don't have a DRYER?" they demanded in a voice of shock.

"Or smart appliances? or a TV? or a big screen movie room? or a doorbell with a camera? or an AI virtual assistant? or a digital ID? How on earth do you LIVE?"

"Quite well," she replied.

"But . . . the convenience," they sputtered.

"Ah, but the privacy," she said with a smile.

It looks so soft and delicate, the seagrass growing in the sand near the sea.

But you know what? Those waving blades earn that term because they are sharp, jabbing at your bare legs as you walk by.

As fragile as they look, the clumps of grass are tough, determined to grow and thrive, and not about to be walked all over.

Love that attitude.

May the artwork take you to a quiet afternoon in the spring, when the flowers in your garden are just beginning to bloom, and all feels peaceful and calm.

They went out that day despite the blustery weather, the rain that hit their faces and the wind that couldn't make up its mind whether it was out to help or hinder them.

And at the end of the day -- a challenging day -- they returned, satisfied with all that they had done and learned.

We never really know, each morning when we awaken and stretch, put on our shoes, and take a sip of tea hot from the campfire, where our walking will take us that day.

Step by step we embark upon the road set before us, shift our pack as it becomes heavy, then set it down to rest when we take a meal, drink the water our body so needs.

Life is a journey, for all of us.

Indeed our lives are not a trudge -- I enjoy a hike through the wilderness! But perhaps others do not, and see it as tiring. For me, the step by step process -- which indeed includes our decisions, our experiences -- is an adventure. You never know what the next bend in the road will show, how it will give a different perspective on the landscape.

And at the end of the day, you are someplace different, and you yourself are different, and that, as you observe, is uplifting.
I totally agree with you about the rampage of the planet. I, however, would put the blame more in the hands of corporations that are out to make money off of every resource they can grab and abuse.

I find that people, real people, who walk on the earth -- whether in their backyard or in places of beauty like Zion -- experience an appreciation for nature that leads many of them to desire to live more simply, and not consume all of the garbage that corporations produce, and push.
You are welcome. May you find something today, see something, hear something, that causes you to pause in a moment of joy.

There's always something, every single day, somewhere, and the challenge for us is to slow down to see it. In your 70 years and your life of adventure, you've no doubt seen and experienced that. I know I have.

May you, and I, and all of us, continue to do so.

 Thank you.
Is there such thing as an ordinary flower?

I imagine it's as likely as an ordinary human being. We, like the flowers, are each of us unique.

And while we all share characteristics with one another -- arms and legs, eyes and hair, a heart to feel and a head to think, how all those elements are put together is what makes us so un-ordinary.

Just like the flowers.

It was her dance, and she took great thought over every step, every movement, every turn.

She could hear the voices in the background -- some even came straight up to her face -- telling her how she should dance, where she should move, sometimes even that she should cast off her wrap and wear garments of their choice.

She didn't get angry at them. But neither did she heed them.

They called it a saddle, the lowest point between two hills or mountains.

It was the perfect resting point for the hike, a spot on the ridge from which one could stand (or sit on a boulder) and see both sides.

A bit chilly it was, with the breeze catching the cool from the snow in the rocky crevices, but oh, how silent and peaceful it was as well!

I was hiking through the Wallowa Mountains in Oregon when I passed through this area. There was something about the light and how it danced about and bounced off the surface of the stones that caused me to stop and firmly plant my feet.

The place felt magical, as if it were filled with elves or faeries, hidden behind the rocks where I couldn't see them, but they could see me.

She brought the umbrella because she wanted to, not because she was told to.

In fact, most people told her she was silly to bring it.

Personally, she thought it was silly to listen to most people at the expense of heeding one's own voice.
