I've had a small Lightning channel of 1M sats closing for MONTHS. I can't bump it. There's only 10K sats on my side, so I don't really care. I decided to go back through old Plebnet chats and found the node owner. He didn't know he had 990,000 sats sitting there in limbo š® His node is dead because of hardware issues. I showed him the nostr:nprofile1qqsrk63a8wentzpk5ex3eqpf9wtww6vwcddzuh9y2800567n4ulwhpqpzdmhxue69uhhqatjwpkx2urpvuhx2ue0532llr Accelerator. He's going to get his sats back! š«šš¤š»
Last year we didn't get much of a winter. We had one storm, while we were in Costa Rica, and it was melted by the time we got back š
That said, as I get older I don't ski any longer and my kids are older so I don't build forts or go sled riding as much as I used to when they were younger. I don't mind a mild winter. My old man back doesn't like to shovel either.
Thank you š„¹ Looking at this all I can see is my bad cable management. It was pretty before I got new monitors for work and swapped everything out a few months ago ago. Ugh.
This user deleted his profile shortly after joining Nostr, but it wasn't because of the community. If you read the early comments before he deleted his profile, you'll see Nostriches providing help. They're giving him instructions on how to find tune his feed, choose his own algorithm, and make the most of Nostr - no matter the content.
I don't think we as a community could have done any better in this example.
I believe this failure at user retention was not at the fault of the community, but more so on the user not willing to learn.
Could we have done better? Sure. There's always room for improvement.
However, the user needs to be willing to learn as well. They need to be willing to step outside their comfort zone, just a little, and learn.
Better luck next time.

Sure, we have a lot of work to do there with onboarding, but having a community offering help is also a great way to gain back the humanization of social media that's been lost over the years.
Agree. There's very little here for just one community type. It's mostly Bitcoin with overlap into several others. i.e. loves me some food pics, but I'm also a Bitcoin.
You should not have to do this. Nostr is very technical still. Developers know this and they're working on improving UX. It just takes time. Until then, the community has to educate and onboard, IMO.
Hah. Apparently we had similar thoughts.

i guess as part of the onboarding process you could have a user select topics that they definitely aren't interested in and don't want to see those topics.

Hmm. I don't believe so. I'm not a Damus mechanic though. nostr:nprofile1qqst68senq8zey0xm3jhaykz2a3v4zpwhynj6fteugslqdlex7ydaygprfmhxue69uhhg6r9vehhyetnwshxummnw3erztnrdaksz9thwden5te0v4jx2m3wdehhxarj9ekxzmnyqyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnwdaehgu3wvfskueqgzfsff nostr:nprofile1qqsr9cvzwc652r4m83d86ykplrnm9dg5gwdvzzn8ameanlvut35wy3gpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq3qamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu3wwa5kuegpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqcu9929
This is the profile that prompted me to make this note. It's sad because he's a creator and would have loved Nostr if he took more time to understand it before getting scared away. This is a loss for us.
Account already deleted? Damn. That's some incredible turnover rate for someone that's a creator and would do every well here on Nostr, IMO.

That's possible. It seems like they don't like Bitcoin and immediately decided that was too much for them. Nostr gives you the tools to see whatever you want to see if you put in the work to configure your feeds.
I don't mean building or creating in the traditional sense. I mean build your community, stack, family, content, anything. And then talk about what you built. Creating anything goes very far on Nostr. Most people here understand value for value and appreciate Proof of Work.
That's one hell of a collection. It almost rivals nostr:nprofile1qqsw9n8heusyq0el9f99tveg7r0rhcu9tznatuekxt764m78ymqu36cpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuat50phjummwv5hszymhwden5te0wahhgtn4w3ux7tn0dejj7qg4waehxw309an8yetwwvh82arcduhx7mn99uuwx66a's stash.

Listen on the web, Snort, Iris, Nostur, etc.
These were incredibly popular speakers. The shielding in them sucked. It basically turned them into a larger antenna and was able to pick up signals from GSM cellular antennas. So when an incoming call from a tower was searching for your phone and your phone was nearby, the speakers would make a bunch of buzzing sounds for a split second before your phone would ring.
