I've had a small Lightning channel of 1M sats closing for MONTHS. I can't bump it. There's only 10K sats on my side, so I don't really care. I decided to go back through old Plebnet chats and found the node owner. He didn't know he had 990,000 sats sitting there in limbo šŸ˜® His node is dead because of hardware issues. I showed him the nostr:nprofile1qqsrk63a8wentzpk5ex3eqpf9wtww6vwcddzuh9y2800567n4ulwhpqpzdmhxue69uhhqatjwpkx2urpvuhx2ue0532llr Accelerator. He's going to get his sats back! šŸ«‚šŸ’œšŸ¤™šŸ»

81 degrees for Halloween is wild.
ā–² ā–¼
Hah. It is! It's normally much cooler. In some fluke years it's been freezing cold, even snowing one year.
ā–² ā–¼
Last year we didn't get much of a winter. We had one storm, while we were in Costa Rica, and it was melted by the time we got back šŸ˜‚

That said, as I get older I don't ski any longer and my kids are older so I don't build forts or go sled riding as much as I used to when they were younger. I don't mind a mild winter. My old man back doesn't like to shovel either.
ā–² ā–¼
 This is the way šŸ˜‚
ā–² ā–¼
Thank you šŸ„¹ Looking at this all I can see is my bad cable management. It was pretty before I got new monitors for work and swapped everything out a few months ago ago. Ugh.
ā–² ā–¼
Eh. Not really all that much. Systems Administrator, but I do a lot of Bash and SQL code and related stuff.
ā–² ā–¼
He makes sure I don't work too hard and check Nostr as much as possible.
ā–² ā–¼
I just pivot all day long šŸ˜…
ā–² ā–¼
 Facebooking? Please elaborate.
ā–² ā–¼
MOAR screens! I have two more monitors behind me šŸ˜‚ But they're on my son's computer
ā–² ā–¼
I haven't used one of those, but I've seen them.
ā–² ā–¼
Each user gets their very own screen to receive their GM and PV.
ā–² ā–¼
 šŸ¤šŸ»
ā–² ā–¼
 Ohhh. šŸ§
ā–² ā–¼
Yes. For 3 winters I heated my home with 3 S9s. I will not be doing that this winter though. It's not worth it after the halving, at least for me.
ā–² ā–¼
Yes. And figure out what your source of heat uses and compare the two. The calculation is pretty easy one you get the numbers.

This user deleted his profile shortly after joining Nostr, but it wasn't because of the community. If you read the early comments before he deleted his profile, you'll see Nostriches providing help. They're giving him instructions on how to find tune his feed, choose his own algorithm, and make the most of Nostr - no matter the content.

I don't think we as a community could have done any better in this example.

I believe this failure at user retention was not at the fault of the community, but more so on the user not willing to learn.

Could we have done better? Sure. There's always room for improvement.

However, the user needs to be willing to learn as well. They need to be willing to step outside their comfort zone, just a little, and learn.

Better luck next time.
nostr:nevent1qqsrycqugfm4jskwwp4z9lkwka4ks0la8kujj485x7lh3yxan9e9rfcpzdmhxue69uhhwmm59e6hg7r09ehkuef0qgs8ktsxmqfg2c3l8w5uv9uh5zxufmwc4pgw3nd3h7mvjje8rcuyc7grqsqqqqqp4jet00
ā–² ā–¼
Sure, we have a lot of work to do there with onboarding, but having a community offering help is also a great way to gain back the humanization of social media that's been lost over the years.
ā–² ā–¼
Sometimes it is overzealous Bitcoiners yelling get a lightning wallet over and over again, but that wasn't the case here.
ā–² ā–¼
Agree. He'll come back when he's ready and hopefully when he doesn't even realize it šŸ«‚šŸ„¹
ā–² ā–¼
Having that layer zero foundation helps cement beautiful relationships.
ā–² ā–¼
It's funny because it's true. We want Nostr to succeed and we want new users to feel welcome.
ā–² ā–¼
Agree. There's very little here for just one community type. It's mostly Bitcoin with overlap into several others. i.e. loves me some food pics, but I'm also a Bitcoin.
ā–² ā–¼
It's not really powered by Bitcoin though. That's just a side quest. The two go hand in hand, but Nostr doesn't need bitcoin.
ā–² ā–¼
Farcaster sounds horrible. I'm imagining each user trying to scam the next.
ā–² ā–¼
You should not have to do this. Nostr is very technical still. Developers know this and they're working on improving UX. It just takes time. Until then, the community has to educate and onboard, IMO.
ā–² ā–¼
Non-bitcoiner social media normie shows up to nostr. They are used to being fed toxic algo garbag...
ā–² ā–¼
Hah. Apparently we had similar thoughts.

nostr:nevent1qqsqfl2a0zyhfdm4zvxgy83g0ajksa4gjyf4ccky00jq6t9c95xaf6spz3mhxw309akx7cmpd35x7um58g6rsd3e9upzq0mhp4ja8fmy48zuk5p6uy37vtk8tx9dqdwcxm32sy8nsaa8gkeyqvzqqqqqqyj37aqt
ā–² ā–¼
Perhaps to combat this as part of the onboarding process we emphasize customization and user control. The ability to choose our own algorithms.
ā–² ā–¼
Thats actually a great test to find out who you need to mute.
ā–² ā–¼
My point is not everyone has the same personality type. Not everyone likes to be fucked with.
ā–² ā–¼
i haven't had a rack in my house in a decade... i could be persuaded though...

If you don't like Bitcoin, but still like Nostr, here's one simple trick to remove the vast majority of Bitcoin content! Add words like Bitcoin, BTC, Satoshi, Blockchain, Timechain, UTXO, etc. to your mute or filter list and most Bitcoin content will be gone! https://nostrcheck.me/media/3f770d65d3a764a9c5cb503ae123e62ec7598ad035d836e2a810f3877a745b24/9d9b1b4db881fe059d864121981146579a4a462a278e56cec29435eb4be8be9f.webp
ā–² ā–¼
Nah we have tons of art, music, and permie content too.
ā–² ā–¼
i guess as part of the onboarding process you could have a user select topics that they definitely aren't interested in and don't want to see those topics.

 Hmm. I don't believe so. ā–² ā–¼
I just looked in Damus and didn't see how to do it. Plz halp?
ā–² ā–¼
Oh nice! Directly from the feed is cool. Thanks
ā–² ā–¼
 I can't believe I didn't see the huge Muted section šŸ˜… Thanks.
ā–² ā–¼
This is the profile that prompted me to make this note. It's sad because he's a creator and would have loved Nostr if he took more time to understand it before getting scared away. This is a loss for us.
ā–² ā–¼
It is! These are the things that most people don't realize.
ā–² ā–¼
Some of the very best creators are still on Facebook and Instagram. I suppose it feels more "legi...
ā–² ā–¼
we gotta help them see the light.
ā–² ā–¼
Account already deleted? Damn. That's some incredible turnover rate for someone that's a creator and would do every well here on Nostr, IMO.

ā–² ā–¼
It sounds like they didn't like Bitcoin šŸ˜‚ Which is absolutely fine, but seems like missing the point of user choice and configurable feeds.
ā–² ā–¼
That's possible. It seems like they don't like Bitcoin and immediately decided that was too much for them. Nostr gives you the tools to see whatever you want to see if you put in the work to configure your feeds.
ā–² ā–¼
Yes. I see that bot every day. It's very cringe.

ā–² ā–¼
This is a real issue. But the majority of people will just use a custodian to get around it.
ā–² ā–¼
Yep. I agree. Those that want a cypherpunk experience will need to do the work, per usual.

How to get Zaps on Nostr. A comprehensive guide:

Build and/or create something.

The end.
ā–² ā–¼
 Big if true.
ā–² ā–¼
I don't mean building or creating in the traditional sense. I mean build your community, stack, family, content, anything. And then talk about what you built. Creating anything goes very far on Nostr. Most people here understand value for value and appreciate Proof of Work.
ā–² ā–¼
Then talk about your failures in detail. A nice post mortem is zap worthy.
ā–² ā–¼
I believe this is part of the Derek Algorithm, yes.
ā–² ā–¼
i think that is the key, Dawn. engagement. full stop.

I orange pilled my cousin last February. She's been stacking ever since. She texted me this morning, randomly, telling me that she was watching the God Bless Bitcoin movie. She got married last month and is excited to get her husband on-board. Let's go.

She also just asked me about self custody. I recommended BitKey.

I told her to never Shitcoin so we're good there. She won't need to learn about crypto privacy.

These were incredibly popular speakers. The shielding in them sucked. It basically turned them into a larger antenna and was able to pick up signals from GSM cellular antennas. So when an incoming call from a tower was searching for your phone and your phone was nearby, the speakers would make a bunch of buzzing sounds for a split second before your phone would ring.
ā–² ā–¼
I think it may have also done it with texts as well. I don't remember.
