Sometimes I get surprised with my forward-thinking 😂 and love the consistency of thought process over the years.
“The problems related to the presence of FALSE POSITIVE and pseudo absences could be solved if #biodiversity characterization was done in a #TaxonomicFree context, looking only at #OTUs to compare biodiversity profiles among samples. […] Although we may never give up on the idea of naming #species, the ease of gathering OTU data is unprecedented, making the prospect of a taxonomic-free #ecology complementary to the traditional one more and more likely in the years to come.”

“Pessimism has been endemic in almost every society throughout history. It has taken the form of the #PrecautionaryPrinciple, and of ‘who should rule?’ political philosophies and all sorts of other demands for prophecy, and of despair in the power of #creativity, and of the misinterpretation of problems as insuperable barriers.”

“Popper’s criterion can be met only by societies that expect their #knowledge to #grow–and to grow unpredictably. And, further, they are expecting that if it did grow, that would HELP. This expectation is what I call #optimism, and I can state it, in its most general form, thus:
The Principle of Optimism
All evils are caused by INSUFFICIENT knowledge.”

As we approach elections in #Rio
“the ‘who should rule?’ approach to political philosophy is not just a mistake of academic analysis: it has been part of practically every bad political doctrine in history. If the political process is seen as an engine for putting the right rulers in power, then it justifies violence, for until that right system is in place, no ruler is legitimate; and once it is in place, and its designated rulers are ruling, opposition to them is opposition to rightness. The problem then becomes how to thwart anyone who is working against the rulers or their policies. By the same logic, everyone who thinks that existing rulers or policies are bad must infer that the ‘who should rule?’ question has been answered wrongly, and therefore that the power of the rulers is not legitimate, and that opposing it is legitimate, by force if necessary. Thus the very question ‘Who should rule?’ begs for violent, authoritarian answers, and has often received them. It leads those in power into tyranny, and to the entrenchment of bad rulers and bad policies; it leads their opponents to violent destructiveness and revolution.”

“Ideas have become a little more flexible. In 2016, the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity added a purpose for restoration, to sustain resilience and conserve biodiversity. The SER now describes the aim of ecological restoration as ‘to move a degraded ecosystem to a trajectory of recovery that allows adaptation to local and global changes, as well as persistence and evolution of its component species.’ 39 Conservation scientists recommend that for conservation programs to be successful, specific targets must be set for interventions and projects, and progress must be judged against them. However, as Dutch philosopher Josef Keulartz observes, restoration of past conditions is ‘a Sisyphean task, akin to paddling upstream into a strong current of global change.’ Over longer time periods, it becomes both less easy and less useful to know what state of nature to use as a baseline against which to measure success. 40 The ecological past is one of constant change. Over decades, centuries, and millennia, ecosystems have evolved continuously in response to climate, as different sets of species have self-assembled to form ecosystems. Furthermore, it is not easy to put a date on the onset of human impacts. Key moments of intense human action may be obvious in some places. In North or South America or Australia, the arrival of Europeans created a marked historical discontinuity, a step up in the level of destruction of nature that accompanied the colonial annexation of territory.”

“Pessimists believe that the present state of our own civilization is an exception to that pattern. But what does the precautionary principle say about that claim? Can we be sure that our present knowledge, too, is not riddled with dangerous gaps and misconceptions? That our present wealth is not pathetically inadequate to deal with unforeseen problems? Since we cannot be sure, would not the precautionary principle require us to confine ourselves to the policy that would always have been salutary in the past–namely innovation and, in emergencies, even blind optimism about the benefits of new knowledge?”

@PABLOF7z , first thank you for exit.pub! Last week I managed to import a a bunch of tweets using your wss://relay.exit.pub and only 1 tweet to the nostr relay I’m running on umbrel, either on a local network or using Tailscale’s MagicDNS. Since a few days ago, nothing happens. I guess, like you suggest in exit.pub, my relay is not accepting them and wss://relay.exit.pub publishes (only) the (same) first 20 messages and then stop. I can’t find anywhere to change any configuration on my umbrel nostr relay. Any ideas/suggestions?
The #DoublHelix article by Watson and Crick, besides its implications for #biology and #life as we know it, is an INCREDIBLE piece of WRITING (in general and scientific writing in particular). I call it writing with the 4Cs: #creativity, #cohesion, #concision, and #coherence. I also LOVE their boldness! Check these excerpts.
“We wish to suggest a structure for the salt of deoxyribose nucleic acid (D.N.A,). This structure has novel features which are of considerable biological interest.” Start saying what you can expect to see by the end of the article
“A structure for nucleic acid has already
proposed by Pauling and Corey'. They kindly made their manuscript available to us in advance of publication. […] In our opinion, this structure is unsatisfactory” Criticize Linus Pauling!!!
“We wish to put forward a radically different structure for the salt of deoxyribose nucleic acid.” Not afraid to be bold!
“The previously published X-ray data on deoxyribose nucleic acid are insufficient for a rigorous test of our structure. So far as we can tell, it is roughly compatible with the experimental data, but it must be regarded as unproved until it has been checked against more exact results.” Not afraid to acknowledge their limitation, but confident on their rational.
“It has not escaped our notice that the specific paring we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material.” This is the most impressive sentence, if not of the article, of all scientific literature. I imagine how long it took to write it! What do you say when you have no time to run all the experiments, but cannot let someone else make the obvious conclusion for you? This is what you say!
“Full details of the structure, including the conditions assumed in building it, together with a set of co-ordinates for the atoms, will be published elsewhere.” Why bother with details when you just made history?!
I’m advising my group to use this article as a template to validate YOUR own next article.

“a recurring theme in pessimistic theories throughout #history has been that an exceptionally dangerous moment is IMMINENT. Our Final Century makes the case that the period since the mid twentieth century has been the first in which #technology has been capable of destroying #civilization. But that is not so. Many civilizations in history were destroyed by the simple technologies of FIRE and the SWORD. Indeed, of all civilizations in history, the overwhelming majority have been destroyed, some intentionally, some as a result of PLAGUE or #natural disaster. Virtually all of them could have avoided the catastrophes that destroyed them if only they had possessed a little ADDITIONAL #knowledge, such as improved AGRICULTURAL or MILITARY technology, better HYGIENE , or better POLITICAL or ECONOMICAL institutions. Very few, if any, could have been saved by greater caution about #innovation. In fact most had enthusiastically implemented the #precautionaryprinciple.”

“Hayek explained that contrary to popular and elementary treatments of the topic, the economic problem is not merely the problem of allocating resources and products, but more accurately, the problem of allocating them using knowledge that is not given in its totality to any single individual or entity. Economic knowledge of the conditions of production, the relative availability and abundance of the factors of production, and the preferences of individuals, is not objective knowledge that can be fully known to a single entity. Rather, the knowledge of economic conditions is by its very nature distributed and situated with the people concerned by their individual decisions. Every human's mind is consumed in learning and understanding the economic information relevant to them. Highly intelligent and hardworking individuals will spend decades learning the economic realities of their industries in order to reach positions of authority over the production processes of one single good. It is inconceivable that all these individual decisions being carried out by everyone could be substituted by aggregating all that information into one individual's. In a free market economic system, prices are knowledge, and the signals that communicate information. Each individual decision maker is only able to carry out her decisions by examining the prices of the goods involved, which carry in them the distillation of all market conditions and realities into one actionable variable for that individual. In turn, each individual's decisions will in turn play a role in shaping the price. No central authority could ever internalize all the information that goes into forming a price or replace its function. […] The rise in the price itself contains all the relevant information they need.” The #Bitcoin Standard. Saifedean Ammous

When you write, respect the reader. A lazy writer throws text on the screen or paper, waiting for the reader so sort and select what is important. But readers, understandable, get bored and leave. @gamonasterioo There’s nothing wrong with a productive mindset. Deep thinking is the overlooked ‘means’, but cannot be an ‘end’. Scientists have to solve problems! The harder the problem, the more deep thinking it may require. The longer it takes to solve, the higher is the scientists bet.
