A few weeks ago, we wrote that we were nearly out of funds and needed the community's help. Throughout this process, we have strived to be as transparent as possible with our finances — both about how we raise money, but also how we spend it.
We hope this becomes the standard for all #bitcoin education projects We cut salaries, delayed expenses and were days away from running out of funds. But no more! 💖

We received the funding to get us to some larger grants that we expect to receive near the end of the year. We bridged the gap — thanks to YOU.
With crisis comes opportunity. We are stronger now for a few reasons...
1️⃣ We will implement an aggressive savings mechanism soon to build up reserves and avoid any future repeats.
2️⃣ We made a regular, annual schedule for grassroots funding campaigns (once in spring in El Salvador, once in fall online).
3️⃣ We've made significant internal structural changes to ensure better internal communication This isn't easy. Funding the project will always be a challenge. We will NEVER compromise our values or impartiality for funding — which eliminates most traditional sources.
We will also continue to build out a global infrastructure for all independent bitcoin educators and give it all away (open-source everything). We are majority grassroots funded from people like you. and we hope you continue to give and help us grow.
My First Bitcoin is a grand experiment to test the limits of what's possible today in order to reimagine what's possible tomorrow.

I have a sad share story to share--but it's also a potent reminder of what we are fighting for
We had invited @MukunguFelix
to come to @BitcoinAtlantis
last week, as part of the @MyfirstBitcoin_ team
Felix is a Bitcoin Education superstar--last year he joined the @MyfirstBitcoin_ Node Network and taught the #BitcoinDiploma to 16 students. This year over 300 have already signed up. That's in addition to his goal of onboarding 100 local businesses in Nairobi
He teaches online so while it is mostly Kenyans, students can join from anywhere. A star pupil last year--
@PallabJD1 -- was so inspired that he continued studying, translated the Diploma into his local language of Assamese, started his own Bitcoin Education project and is the first node to join our network from India
All of the above accomplishments were achieved with almost no financial support
For the Feb 29th @MyfirstBitcoin_ Education Unconference we set aside 21% of all ticket sales to a grant for the network. The network is self-governing and choose Felix to receive this grant of about $1,000
The closing of the Unconference was meant to be the announcement and transfer of funds to Felix--showing a tangible example of how we can support each other
Felix wasn't there. Despite having all the required papers, supporting documentation, paid hotel and travel reservations, he was not granted a visa. There are no stamps in his passport--he has still never left Kenya in his life
Felix will still receive the grant--because #Bitcoin does not require permission
I've never met Felix in person and was disappointed that that will have to wait, but this is a potent reminder of what we are fighting for. We are fighting for a world in which Felix was there with all of in Portugal last week. We are fighting for a world in which we--not some politician or bureaucrat--get to define our own destiny

We hosted an Independent Bitcoin Education Unconference in El Salvador
We planned some speakers, but also left time at the day's start for everyone present to participate in filling out the rest of the schedule. The goal, like so much of what
@MyfirstBitcoin_
does, was to try and learn from #Bitcoin itself and move toward decentralization and giving agency to the individual
It was a wild success. So much so that we decided to organize them internationally in 2024. We will continue to learn, document the process & open source everything by this years end. We believe that our particular version, focused on grassroots Bitcoin education efforts, will create stronger communication channels to share best practices, strengthen individual projects and speed up the timeline. We also hope to encourage others within the Bitcoin space to apply the concept in their own way, within their own focus

What is an unconference & why did we choose this format?
An unconfernce is decentralized and meant to empower the individual participant at the expense of a centralized body. In a true unconference the agenda isn't even set ahead of time, but rather at the start of the day by whoever attends.
We'll do a hybrid model for this first attempt:
The event will be divided into three areas. Indoors will be a more traditional setting with speakers, a stage, a microphone and lots of chairs facing one direction. Outside there will be a pre-organized space for thematic discussions, each with a lead to keep the group on track, but open for all to contribute. In the true spirit of an unconference, which is decentralized and where content and direction is decided by all participants, there will be an additional space outside whose schedule will be made the day of the event.
Why this format?
Because part of the mission of
@MyfirstBitcoin_
is to empower the individual; another part is to reimagine what's possible. This means we try a lot of new things. Then we learn from the experience and we do it better the next time.

This conference isn’t for people who want to teach how to get rich, this is for those who want to teach how to get free.
This isn't about Bitcoin, but rather what Bitcoin will teach us: critical thought, personal responsibility and ultimately self-sovereignty. Bitcoin teaches us to lower our time preference and look further into the future—and that changes everything. When we have control over our lives and future, it encourages us to build and plan.
Bitcoin allows us to define our destiny.
And if the point is to allow people to think for themselves then it’s so important that we, as educators, do not dictate to students what to believe but rather allow them to arrive at their own conclusions. We live in a world where we are constantly told what to think; this must be different.
This conference is about revolution.
It’s about sharing best practices, creating international communication channels and entrenching an idea whose time has come: that independent, impartial, community-led Bitcoin education will change the world.

Massive Bitcoin Education Program Launch in El Salvador (Sept 7, 2023)
Usulután, El Salvador--This morning, with support from @MyFirstBitcoin_ & @BitcoinBeach, the Ministry of Education (@EducacionSV) began a pilot program that could bring Bitcoin education to every school in the country in 2024.
The pilot program, which launched on the 2-year anniversary of the #BitcoinLaw, will teach 150 public school teachers about Bitcoin. Those teachers will then return to their own classrooms, scattered around the nation, and teach in their local school.
@MyfirstBitcoin_
is a Bitcoin education NGO & non-profit based in El Salvador which has taught over 25,000 in-person, in-country students since launching in 2021. Last year they developed a 10-week #BitcoinDiploma and began teaching it around the nation. It has since been open-sourced and improved, currently on the 5th edition. This diploma was taught to staff from the Ministry of Education earlier this year and is the material being used today to teach the teachers. The Ministry has used it as primary source material to develop their own curriculum which the teachers will use in their local schools as the pilot program expands.
@Bitcoinbeach
is the pioneering Bitcoin circular economy project that’s success helped lead to the nation adopting Bitcoin as legal tender. They have also assisted with trainings as well as provided funding to print books.
@bitcoinofficesv
, an official government office and another pioneering product born in El Salvador, has also been instrumental in getting the project off the ground and ensuring its success. This is in addition to their work with

which is a separate, ongoing education program focused on elite developers.

was founded with two ambitious goals in mind: to help teach a nation Bitcoin & to help make El Salvador into an example for the world to follow. While the Ministry of Education in El Salvador forges new ground, the world is taking notice.

works with grassroots education projects in over 20 nations, sharing their open-source materials and best practices. They have also begun early talks with two additional LatAm governments interested in providing Bitcoin education at scale.

Rudy Gallardo & Eliazar Aquijay are both lead teachers at Bitcoin Lake, a beautiful and vibrant community who had us & our team for visit during the last few days.
We had the chance to tour Lake Atitlan, the 'Bitcoin Lake' 🚤 🌊, in Panajachel, Guatemala and use #Bitcoin for buying goods & services, and yesterday we joined the students🧑🎓👩🎓 during their Bitcoin Diploma graduation🎓
Our community builder & teacher Napoleón Osorio, and the teacher Reyna Chicas, shared the success of the Bitcoin Diploma in Lake Atitlan.
Reyna is now staying in Guatemala as My First Bitcoin's teacher to develop Bitcoin education in the country🫡
