I just googled it and, growing up a non-ranger kid ,that was the craziest shit I ever read.
“Simple explanation: As Sentai at the time moved on from Zyuranger to Dairanger to Kakuranger, the Power Rangers production team had much tumult to figure out how to handle Tommy’s transition from Green to White Ranger.
By the time Lord Zedd arrived in the beginning of Season 2 (1994–95), the Rangers had upgraded the ever iconic Dinozords to the more powerful ThunderZords but Tommy didn’t have enough power to support a new Zord as the Green Ranger. Simply because in Dairanger, the Green Ranger was part of the core group and was not the sixth. White was. Not only that, many of those older than me who used to watch the show back in the day but no longer do don’t realize that it wouldn’t feel right having Tommy as the original Green Ranger possessing a White Tigerzord because it could never work and the powers don’t match. Green had the Dragon, White had the Tiger.
Plus, there are no more footage of the Green Ranger from Zyuranger (aka. Dragon Ranger) and PR exclusive Zyu2 left that they could keep using even if Green is still the most iconic out of all of the original six.
Originally, there were plans to have Jason David Frank to move to Saban’s other show similar to Power Rangers, at the time a pilot called Cybertron (not to be confused with the well beknown home world of the Transformers), which would later be in the form of VR Troopers (1994–1996) and Brad Hawkins, who would then be known as Ryan Steele from VR would be the White Ranger as originally intended but since JDF and Tommy were popular with Power Rangers fans, Saban insisted on bringing JDF back and keeping him and his Tommy character in Power Rangers, promoting him as team leader and demoting Jason (since Austin St. John was fired from the show due to low pay and contract issues) and Hawkins would be in the latter show spin-off as his Ryan Steele character. And thus, Tommy as the White Ranger truly worked.
To be frank, I have always been more of a White Ranger guy than a Green Ranger one. Considering I never had a lot of Green Ranger stuff growing up, even today as an Adult. It’s just that Tigerzord was just so awesome and then when the Rangers got the Ninja Zords and Powers from Ninjor in Season 3, he got the “winged lord of the skies” Dulcea said in the [first non-canonical] Movie, the FalconZord. Not to knock on anyone who is a Green Ranger/Dragonzord fan.”
