There was a whild story in McSweeneys many years ago about an 'abandoned animation technique' [totally imaginary, alas] that grew out of painting. Through unspecified means, the artist could imbue a painting with the capability to display movement. If I can remember when I get home, I'll dig it up.
@Chris Trottier FWIW, no. CGA wasn't a thing until mid-80s & the pink-blue gradient was pretty well established by '81 (when I went away to college). But I still think you're onto something: That dominant 80s art style was particularly amenable to CGI-level graphics.
It's hard to remember now but as late as 1986 most graphic artists & designers didn't own or even use computers.
@db6c47ce I think the last time this happened it was holiday tchotchke from my former employer. (Fairly nice tchotchke, TBF, a Yeti coffee mug that I use almost every day.)
