The South American #monsoon, which determines the #climate of much of the continent, might be pushed towards a “critical destabilisation point”, finds new study with PIK scientist Niklas Boers. This could put the #Amazon #rainforest at risk of large-scale dieback, which would in turn lead to substantial additional global warming due to additional release of greenhouse gases from the degrading trees.

“My emotional response is anger. With every square kilometre of deforestation, every fraction of degree of global warming, we are raising the risk of a tipping point. Yet, it is incredibly simple to just stop deforestation. It is an absolutely unique ecosystem that we really can’t afford to lose”, says PIK scientist Niklas Boers, co-author of the newly published study on the South American monsoon in The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/oct/04/south-american-monsoon-heading-towards-tipping-point-likely-to-cause-amazon-dieback
"It is not enough to decarbonize the global energy system. The other #planetaryboundaries on land, biodiversity, nutrients, water & pollutants can on their own make us crash through the 1.5°C limit." All #PlanetaryBoundaries mapped out, six of nine crossed: For the first time, an international team of scientists is able to provide a full picture of planetary resilience by mapping out all nine boundary processes that define a safe operating space for humanity.

“This update clearly depicts a patient that is unwell, as pressure on the planet increases and vital boundaries are being transgressed”, says co-author Johan Rockström: https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en/news/latest-news/a-full-picture-of-planetary-resilience-all-boundaries-mapped-out-six-of-nine-crossed

1st systematic stability inspection for West #Antarctica: Current #ice loss may still be reversible! But: Destabilization of marine sectors of ice sheet could initiate slow, but certain long-term ice loss.
