Maybe something like ||| -12- |||. So you always see the immediate level of neighbors no matter where you are in the thread.
Look at how sync for reddit worked for reference. Long hold a comment to collapse or expand further. Then truncate other replies based on what the user collapsed or expanded. Sync for reddit died after API changes but man... They had some awesome UI for reference in this exact scenario.
An option to back outta of it? After so many messages are received an option pops up?
