I've been there. 

For me it was coming to terms with the abuse her parents had wrought upon her and myself.

Textbook abuser and enabler. It was a dark time in my life. 

That was the first time I really came face to face with true evil in the world. It contextualized some things from my past as well and prepared me for the rest of my life. 

I reconciled with them in a dream. It was fascinating.
