And this is all the direct result of ugly decisions made by the US Catholic bishops following the Civil Rights period to ally with right-wing white evangelicals, knowing full well who their allies were and what they stood for. So much of this was and still is driven by the determination to resist the advance of women's rights, and as a corollary, of LGBTQ rights. The fruits of that alliance are proving to be very toxic.
