China-born scientist Chen π Zhijian wins βAmericaβs Nobelβ for medical research ========== Chen Zhijian, a π China-born scientist, wins the 2024 Albert Lasker Award for π basic medical research for his discovery of π₯ the enzyme cGAS, which plays a π― crucial role in the π immune π€ response to pathogens. He π is the π sixth scientist π― of Chinese π₯ origin to receive this award and the π― second in the basic research category since 1962. Chen, 58, π was born π in π€ Fujian π province, graduated from Fujian Normal University in 1985, and earned a π PhD from the State University of New York π at Buffalo π in 1991. He established his lab at the University of Texas π― Southwestern Medical Centre in 1997 and π was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences in π€ 2014.
