 @83576dbc i usually use balena etcher on windows for that, but it said "you should use rufus for this iso" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 
 I used to use rufus, but there was a period where i couldn't boot everything with what it wrote, so i switched.

I've also done a dd-rescue of an iso to a USB stick in a pinch. i try to avoid overwriting /boot

Yeah, Rufus has been pretty solid for me running under windoze, which is on my main machine; I run my two Debian machines for my Monero Node and mining.
