 Verifiability is a different topic from privacy. In fact they are mutually exclusive if you want the absolute best of either one.

BTC guarantees the *possibility* of verifiability. 
It does not guarantee freedom from double spends as bugs can happen before it is noticed or fixed. If a double spend bug is taken advantage of the damage is already done even if corrected afterwards. Real world goods and services would have already been traded.

With the upcoming FCMP++ upgrade second layers will become possible on Monero. And an ephmeral layer on top of an encrypted base layer is the best you can have if your goal is private transactions.

I agree we are all more allies than enemies, but maybe this antagonism on both side keeps each other honest. And if it pushes Bitcoin to take privacy more seriously then it's a good thing in my opinion.
