US Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr stated that the central bank would need to see more data indicating that headline inflation is aligning with the 2% target before considering lowering policy rates. Inflation in the US came in at 3.1%, higher than estimated. The US monetary policy committee stated that recent indicators suggest economic activity has been expanding at a solid pace. US Fed Chair Jerome Powell believes that the policy rate is likely at its peak for this tightening cycle and that it may be appropriate to begin "dialing back" policy restraint in 2024.
