I managed to get my Mom on XMPP, but the rest of my family would rather cut me out of their life than install an app on their phone.

For the rest on my end I got a VoIP phone number bridged to XMPP from jmp.chat. Less than ideal, but at least we can get a hold of each other when we need to.
