I theorized that if you use 3D models you could in theory animate an entire 2D animation. Of course there are already a few of those out there and a few artists have been dabbling in making 3D models to generate artworks of their own style of characters. The issue is consistency which you already have animators that can do cleanup of frames.

The real end state would be using AI to direct a scene.  AI could use a 3D engine with stock animations, generated voices and dialogue, it could in theory make its own movie from a prompt. Even make it look like 2D animation too.
