 Work-from-home era is bad for thieves. They find a new target
==========

The number of burglaries in the US fell 9.8% last year, marking the 12th consecutive annual decline and the 29th in the last 35 years. Adjusted for population, burglaries are down 86% since 1980, 52% since 1960, and 29% since just before the pandemic in 2019. The decline in burglaries is attributed to improved home security, including internet-linked alarm systems and doorbell cameras. The work-from-home trend has also contributed to the decline in burglaries, as burglars try to avoid dwellings with people in them. The percentage of paid workdays worked from home more than doubled in the US from the early 2000s to 2019. A study in England and Wales found that neighborhoods with residents more likely to work from home experienced steeper burglary declines. The decline in burglaries has resulted in economic gains and improved well-being for communities. However, there has been an increase in online property crime during the pandemic.
