Nothing to do with your note, but what are the chances that in the past year or so you posted on twitter about personally liquidating an ira? I’m pretty sure it was your post I saw. In any case, that post spurred me to look into it and I learned I was able to liquidate all of the contributions to my Roth without a taxable event. I did so and used it all to buy btc. So, if you do remember mentioning that on twitter, I owe you thanks, because I’m incredibly happy to have made that decision. Cheers!
my loss is your gain! I did that at 60k in 2021 and it dropped to 28k literally a week later. glad you timed it better 🤝
How did you do it?
I can’t tell if your question is for me or not, but if it is: If you’ve had a Roth IRA for 5 years or more, you can liquidate all of the contributions that you’ve made without creating a taxable event. You don’t get to withdraw any earnings that the Roth has made, only the money that you’ve put in. You had to have had the Roth for a minimum of 5 years. Otherwise, you can’t do it. I just emailed the financial advisor who I opened the Roth with and told him I wanted to liquidate all of the contributions. He sent me some docusign paperwork and within a few weeks it was wired into my bank account.
