The Biden administration is awarding nearly $2 billion in grants to help restart or expand electric vehicle manufacturing and assembly sites owned by General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, Volvo, and other carmakers in eight states. The Energy Department will issue grants totaling $1.7 billion to create or retain thousands of union jobs and support auto-based communities in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, and Virginia. The grants cover various aspects of the automotive supply chain, including parts for electric motorcycles and school buses, hybrid powertrains, heavy-duty commercial truck batteries, and electric SUVs. The grants are funded by the 2022 climate law and aim to ensure the future of the auto industry is made in America by American union workers. The selected projects are expected to create over 2,900 jobs and retain about 15,000 union workers across all 11 facilities. The grants come as part of President Biden's commitment to electric vehicles and his climate agenda.
