Microsoft has relinquished its board observer position at OpenAI to alleviate concerns from U.S. and UK antitrust regulators about its influence over the AI startup amid the increasing popularity of generative artificial intelligence.

However, a source at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission indicated on Wednesday that this change is unlikely to address the FTC’s concerns. The agency is currently conducting an antitrust review of deals involving major tech firms and leading AI companies.
