The worst part about trying to help an autistic person out is that by helping, you are putting them into a social situation, which makes it worse. For example, my autistic daughter is well liked and lots of kids want to play with her at recess. Recess is especially stressful for her-- she also has selective mutism. She wants to be alone to recover a bit from school-- being social is the hardest work of all. She has to explain to everyone she wants to be alone for break, and then they ask her why and think something is wrong. Everyone fusses. She will do all the social work of explaining and then the teacher will see her alone and then play with her because they think she is outcast or depressed or something. People might recommend she go to a quiet room. Then everyone asks her where she was all afternoon, and she was in a boring room to boot. She decided to bring a book to recess so everyone just leaves her alone while she can still be part of the group. It helps. #ActuallyAutistic
