Seeing that syncthing exists makes me wonder why anyone would want to host their data on something like owncloud. Where is the catch?

syncthing is great software, i use it all the time, never used owncloud personally

but i guess the latter is more geared toward single file server usage; you might want to replicate some data on every device you use it on, as syncthing does, but not all of it especially large stuff like directories with tons of images and video
for example, owncloud supports things like personal music streaming which is quite cool, if you don't want to use spotify but also wouldn't want your entire music collection on every device
I have been searching for a solution for an online backup for my data. In a related thread right here on nostr, someone just answered: "I think syncthing is great." That was all. So I tried it, and I am still literally amazed. I love syncthing.
Thanks for your input guys, this is exactly what I was hoping to find out! Nostr is a true super power when one has such questions 😀
I've been a SyncThing maxi for many many years. I use it on all my devices, and mostly use tools that store all their data in simple file structures so I can sync app folders across devices. It's incredibly powerful.
