China natural disasters cost US$3.3b in first quarter, government says

In the first quarter of 2024, natural disasters in China, including floods, droughts, an earthquake, freezing conditions, landslides, and flooding on the Yellow River, caused direct economic losses of 23.76 billion yuan (US$3.28 billion), according to the government. The disasters resulted in the deaths of 79 people, with 110,000 needing emergency relocation and resettlement, and 10.4 million people across 26 regions and provinces affected. Other natural disasters included a drought affecting 424,000 hectares of crops, sandstorms, and forest fires. In 2023, natural disasters in China caused 345.45 billion yuan (US$47.7 billion) of direct economic losses, with 691 people dead or missing. The government plans a three-year campaign to improve response times during disasters and accidents.
