Man, I wish you were right.  Unfortunately, I have had bitcoin stolen from me by exchanges.  I can’t get too deep into the details because it would doxx the situation.

You are correct that 99% of bitcoiners keep it with the exchange or custodian, which defeats the purpose.  It's supposed to be a circular economy, to replace dollars.  Even popular maxi-nostr users say this
