China may be seeking a submarine presence in the Sea of Japan, which could serve as a hiding place for Chinese ballistic missile submarines. In December, two Chinese H-6 bombers entered the airspace above the Sea of Japan to rendezvous with Russian Tu-95 bombers. They were accompanied by fighter jets, patrol planes, and other aircraft from both countries, flying from the Sea of Japan to the East China Sea. This poses a security risk for Japan as it could be a launching point for nuclear weapons aimed at the U.S.
