Amazon has joined Microsoft and Google in investing in nuclear power, announcing three deals that aim to add 300 megawatts of capacity in the Pacific Northwest and Virginia. The company is partnering with startups X-Energy and Energy Northwest to build small modular reactors (SMRs), which generate a fraction of the power produced by contemporary nuclear power plants. Amazon expects the reactors to start generating electricity in the early 2030s.
