Why not both options? Ideas what that means: By promoting a follower to a friend you get notified when a friends posts a note. That would help to stay closer connected, like real friends. Or maybe friends are just defined automatically by profiles you follow and they actually follow back. If you could filter out notes from profiles not following you back you could focus your attention on friends only. That might help to have more replies and deeper conversations, like with real friends.
I already have mine set as "Frens"
This could cause some issues. E.g. "so and so stopped following me so im not going to follow them". Im working down my list of people I directly follow (goal: zero) in favor of assigning to lists. But this has the effect of not only showing that im not following someone, to also influencing various clients to blur images of accounts im not following (thankfully nostrudel makes it a toggleable setting). Of course, the more that different clients try new things and empower users to do the same, the more interesting use cases we'll get out of it.
True. Usually we have more followers than friends. And follower-relation is unidirectional, while it would be nice if the friendship relation will be bidirectional
