I'm about to switch to an open source solution for my home network. Anybody on OpenWrt here can recommend a Modem/Router? I got my eyes on the reasonable Linksys WRT 3200 ACM ... https://image.nostr.build/b0f8ee09a0b79bacd7bea704f087c22c75b6f2689509d42a2bbd91e85ca155ff.jpg ...as well as on the unreasonable but much for fun Asus Rog Rapture GT-AC5300... https://image.nostr.build/994d5074efe78fe636b04c50274241b462c2332694d5817f61037e8a790525aa.jpg #opensource #foss #openwrt
I think Flint 2 is out now, I have this it's a great router 👍 https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-ax1800/
Thank you, I looked into it. Am convinced. Found one barely used, 75€. Price is great! LFG?! https://image.nostr.build/c5d1fbf530b44f17a61eaf3911543860e941501c71bcc58c328d5454775355f8.jpg
Great price! I got mine after Jameson Lopp recommend it. Good piece of kit, highly configurable, I'm not using a fraction of its potential, must experiment a bit more!
I wall mounted mine, UPS supply the other side of the wall in the garage 👍 https://image.nostr.build/4a32d7de4d91b57e0e9f9defc99d99013ca886e91cf3cf311a394f88f847ea24.jpg
I got the Glinet router, works great.
DO NOT buy the WRT 3200 ACM if you plan on installing OpenWRT, it has issues and either WiFi or something else will not work properly, we spend hours if not days to figure it out with professional IT and came to the same conclusions as some online posts and tickets, it's not working. WRT 1900 AC works fine, it's was I still use, but it's a bit outdated. Omnia Turris are top notch but using a special OS with OpenWRT in the backend and an additional UI on top, not sure that it's 100% open source, to be checked. You might be able to install only OpenWRT but last time I check it was not officially supported. Beside that it's the dream hardware, 5 ethernet + choice betwen RJ45 or SPIF for WAN, so direct support of some FTTH providers, power full CPU, upgradable hardware, ... and it's made by a EU (CZ) company, not US or Chinese. Lastly, there is still the option to turn a MiniPC (even an old cheap on) into a custom router, there are some video online from Wolfgang and others, it's worth checking this option out.

Oof. Dreamy hardware but I don't intend to spend this much money https://image.nostr.build/1a6e9a7f0a60c1cd9615c0b7ca346811485e733460612c603603af2d6ac6d116.jpg
Internet down since yesterday, shortly after I did my research on a new home networking setup. Still not back online after 12 hours. There are no coincidences 👀 ISP is watching me nostr:nevent1qqsgvafk0466rl2s3tnddhwj2kjuhx8zcqqewr24u6vmaezt06s8wkqpr3mhxue69uhkummnw3erytnyv9jkgctvw4ekcctzwvhxjmczyrlyq0hr55evnnyfx4nvmhtqg0y8975jv8djgqf86cpaj8qzvwgajqcyqqqqqqg90us78
@Andyl @Flobstr @Eluc Showtime! I ordered the Flint. As for the modem, I'm thinking: Zyxel VDSL2 17a Bonding and 35b Bridge Modem [VMG4005-B50A-EU01V1F] https://image.nostr.build/9a741b313caa7b20ec5f22e002aedde860027b0c19b3e4cc24ebcb52a60f5e00.jpg Plain and simple, any objections? I have a 250mbit downstream connection and I won't upgrade anytime soon. We got 1GBit fiber available but I don't need that much bandwidth atm. I won't add an additional AP at this point neither but I'm intrigued by Loops setup and will upgrade in the future.
Scratch that, it's the Zyxel Modem VMG3006-D70A im looking for: https://image.nostr.build/bba7dd739ea1d290898a6d10dfebbdfd1c9ba86c3fb182bf5fb88accbe048a65.jpg Either the Zyxel or the Draytek Vigor 130/165 pop up all the time in forums. Anyone of you using this combination, flint + Zyxel or Vigor?
The Flint looks nice, I never heard of it, let me know how it is as I might need to replace my WRT1900 anytime, it has already some fan issues, I must be ready to replace it anytime.
I got it second hand for 75€ total, barely used, basically new. Offer is online for over a month at a 50% discount so it looks like there isn't much demand for this kind of hardware. Resell value very low. I got the modem for 80€, it's a good team and perfect for my needs. Thanks for the help!
By the way I have an FTTH to ethernet converter that I don't use anymore, if you can use FTTH but I see VDSL so not sure you could use it, depending on your service provider option. If interested it's a TP-Link MC220L with a TL-SM321B (1000Base-BX WDN Bi-Directional SFP Module). Nobody want it in Switzerland because it's limited to 1Gbit/s but all provider offer 10GBit/s now. If you or anyone is interested I can sell it for cheap, I have to check shipping cost in EU.
You have 10gbit in Switzerland? 16k video steams?
In some cities yes, but not in my town, I have "only" 300/30Mbit/s and it cost 50% more than the 10Gbits... Some 10Gbits offer start at 40-50€ per month during blackfriday or chrsitmas sales. It's basically a gimmick as even the provided router barely reach 6-7Gbits, which is already way too much for most users anyway. There is even a provider offering 25Gbits symetrical, the monthly cost is the same than 10GBits (about 70€ per month) but you have to buy your own hardware and the cheapest compatible switch is more than 700€ + some 250€ one time setup fee for the 25GB fiber. So you really need to be an enthousiast homelab amateur.
Thanks everyone for helping me finding the best hardware for my home network ❤️✌️ Now let's Lopp this all together 😬 https://image.nostr.build/642322ac2a5ebd6f951af6a3a668d670479670562ff08213d9e69d52f1e47717.jpg nostr:nevent1qqsgvafk0466rl2s3tnddhwj2kjuhx8zcqqewr24u6vmaezt06s8wkqpzpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezumt0d5hsyg87gqlw8ffje8xgjdtxehwkqs7gwtafycwmysqj04srmywqycu3mypsgqqqqqqsqz7txh
You might want to check out my NIP-54 wiki article on wireless networking, no particular router recommended but some info you might still find helpful naddr1qvzqqqrcvgpzqamkcvk5k8g730e2j6atadp6mxk7z4aaxc7cnwrlkclx79z4tzygqythwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnwdaehgu3wvfskuep0qqfhw6tjv4kx2umn94hx2arhdaexk6twvu4dlmw8
Will do, thank you!
Thanks! Also feel free to let me know if you have any input but don't have time to do an edit. I haven't been able to get any good peer review of that article yet 🙏
I have set up a modem and router once, 20 years ago. To be honest, I don't know enough to know what I'm doing wrong here. It seems that my router is able to call the ISP, username and password and VLAN ID seem to be set correctly. Renamed interface ppp0 to pppoe-wan Using interface pppoe-wan Connect: pppoe-wan <--> eth0.7 Remote message: [UI-SBR:280064,46016;UI-LINEID:WinSIM.2GJS6;] PAP authentication succeeded peer from calling number xy:z1:12:34:5a:bc authorized (number redacted) Now Ethernet shows connecting... and that's it. When IP?? 1) what If I enable ipv6 and set it to static, I get an Ethernet connection but no internet. #asknostr #network https://image.nostr.build/e646c336a1c67298dc714d05b45fe6147f7e88db0313445c728413de5dfc9bcb.jpg
@Jameson Lopp I'm setting up my home network, following your tutorial that was recommended to me. But I struggle with basic shit. I drain hours into researching what I don't know, maybe you instantly see what's the matter... Can you help me please?
Networking is not my strong suit 🫠 I'm not familiar with PPOE configs...
