China-born scientist Chen Zhijian wins π βAmericaβs π Nobelβ for medical research ========== Chen Zhijian, a π China-born scientist, wins the 2024 Albert Lasker Award for basic medical research for his discovery of the enzyme π― cGAS, which plays a π crucial π₯ role in the π immune response to pathogens. He is the sixth scientist of Chinese π€ origin to receive this award and the second in the basic research π₯ category π since 1962. Chen, π― 58, was born π in Fujian province, graduated from Fujian Normal University π€ in 1985, and earned a PhD from π the π State π― University π€ of New π York π at Buffalo in 1991. He established his π₯ lab π€ at π the University π of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre in 1997 and was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences in 2014.
