I also heard him use two other metaphors which he probably modernized to make the phone and revolving door ones… When crossing a river with a raft, once you cross the river you leave the raft on the shore… you don’t go carrying it around with you. When using a rock to bang on door to get let in… you put the rock back down, you don’t carry it in with you. Probably an old Buddhist saying.
