IMHO the difference can be made between  organized events and coordinated gatherings 😉

For context I see Events as : getting as much paying people by getting in influencers on the speakers list 

And gathering: whomever comes is tempted by mouth--to-mouth advertisement, been drawn in by the atmosphere that the visitors bring themselves.  Aka. Everything that goes around outside an organized event 😁. 
Or at least that is what I hope a coordinated gathering would be, and that these replace the money churning events 😜
