 The John the Baptist Moment
“Picture for a moment a small picturesque Middle Eastern town. There is a wall around the town. The houses are relatively small and maybe single-family dwellings. The roads are simple one-lane dirt roads. Kids are playing in the dusty streets. The market is small but bustling. Herders lead their flocks down the street, taking them out to pasture or the market to sell. Here and there, you might see evidence that this town is under Roman authority. But for the most part, at least for now, the Roman authority is leaving the town to its own devices and not meddling overly much. This town has one central religious meeting place where almost everyone goes.

Can you picture it?”
