One of the routes of the cable went near an industrial facility and when they fired up for a shift everything downstream of that location would lose internet. 

4 AM reset does lead me to an external event triggering the modem to reset. My normal debugging of this would be to swap the modem with a known working one from another field location and wait and watch.
