I don’t know what your familiarity with firearms is, but my interactions with people who aren’t very familiar with them is that the unknown creates a lot of unneeded discomfort for them. Similar to people who don’t know how to drive and worry about the safety of driving.

One stat is that concealed carry licensed individuals commit crime at a lower rate than police officers. Depending on who you are I’d bet you’d feel safer walking with some police officers than if they were unarmed people.

I think it’s great when people take the time to prepare themselves to protect themselves and others, and to take that role seriously. It’s mostly a question of the ratio of those people to the baddies in my mind.
