The actual reason he's hiding is he has passed this earthly plane and now he is her guide. He doesn't want to manifest fear in those with less understanding, so he hides in his granddaughters protective embrace.

I think he's hiding because he still has learning to do and, like all of us, we learn more about life through our kids.
