Sunscreens are complex question. I wish I’d kept a copy as not managed to find it again after but Sweden has few long term studies going where people have volunteered to track long term health. The skin cancer element was interesting. If I remember rightly it was tracking over 25 years. Prevalence of skin cancer from low to high (it’s been years so may have this slightly wrong. If anyone is successful in finding the study, feel free to refute, it was in a peer reviewed journal but cannot remember which either (yeah, am an idiot)):

people who never wore sunscreen and passed moderate amount of time in the sun
no sunscreen and very low sun exposure
 sunscreen and moderate expose
 no sunscreen high exposure
 always sunscreen and high exposure
