I think a problem was in school, when we were taught it was this or that, likely because science was behind the news at the time, and folk hate adapting to new knowledge.  Babies aren't all born either/or and some parents are making serious decisions for their child in an attempt to have a "normal" kid. That also doesn't seem widely known.
