In practice, #Mastodon is the most popular Fediverse application by far, and the easiest entry point.

I am all for pointing out alternatives for specific applications, such as #Pixelfed for image hosting. But newcomers need to get started somewhere, and it's best if they don't get overwhelmed early on.
