My father was a first generation Canadian with a job at GM in St Catherines Ontario. He could afford a good house, take care of the family, because the Union was strong, and there was a Canadian Social Safety net.
I was able to got to university, and eventually become a teacher, and have a middle class life.
My son in his 30s is still struggling to find employment, that both pays a full living wage, and offers job security.
They have been eating away at wages, job security, and household ownership and security for decades. The working class was once an owning class, but they were not a greedy owning class.
My parents came of age during "The Dirty Thirties", they would be so angry & saddened to see the generational gains being erased.
